Type 2 combi and type 412 gearbox the same?

The ratios wont be the same, but I was referring to it externally. Its completely different in size and mounting points.

Nothing is the same. Type 4 transmission and its parts are different from al other transmissions. Closest family is the Porsche 911 transmission which has been transplanted into type 4 cars before. Although none of the internal parts are the same. On a 911 the shift shaft exits at the bottom below the Porsche's torsion tube. Type 4 transmission's shift shaft is in the same low position. Kombi/ beetle's shift shaft goes above torsion tube.

Type 4 transmission should be mounted as to have no weight on the front nosecone. After problems with the first few cars, vw changed the mounting system which solved an issue. Since then vw only used bump stops in that position on the 411/412. Otherwise the light casing distorts causing damage inside. (Gear design clearances can often be critical, if its out by a few microns or running skew, high rate of wear can result).
Diff is also weaker than kombi box. Especially 1st gear ratio will be too tall for heavy kombi use..

Best would be to keep the Kombi box and get a new adapter plate for the motor to mount on the kombi box,

There are a few adapter plate around, you may even be able to get one from guys on this forum.

How on earth did you fit a 4Y motor into a variant? Where did you put the radiator?

Think at the time there was a photo from bull run showing a large hole in the front...
I was thinking if the gearbox oil seal leak previously mentioned was related to the conversion. If an adaptor plate is a bit skew/off centre, or too thick, this has been known to cause damage/oil leaks to transmission. Sometimes the input shaft is not well supported causing damage. Then replacing the seal might solve issue for a short while.

How on earth did you fit a 4Y motor into a variant? Where did you put the radiator?

As Dawie says below we fitted it in the nose, cooling worked perfect. Fan hardly had to come on. I think the length of piping to back and return helped with the cooling.
