Thanks. Added an additional 1mm aluminium washer to existing washer and seems better. Haven't measured yet.
Have to test her when this storm subsides and report back

So I think I actually have a burnt valve.
Sounds like backfire through the intake and it's not timing or valve clearance.
Oh well. Have a spare set of new heads I bought from Tony Z that I better get ready to fit.

check for vacuum leaks.
Spray quickstart around every seal and gasket on the inlet system with the car idling. If the sound changes, you've found it.

If you have a twinport, make sure those intake rubber boots are sealing 100%. I have a 1300 twin port with the intake manifold and end casting diameters being slightly smaller than the 1600. The only boots I could get locally was for 1600, so it’s a bit of a struggle getting a proper seal. I resorted to using some sealant and all is fine now. You mentioned 31 Pict 3, which is only used on 1300 DP, AFAIK.
