Aircooled VW South Africa

hello all... i am desperate for help. i have managed to get hold of a near perfect 61 type 1 body....... i am hoping to transfer this to my 71 floorpan... however, the fittings are slightly different, especially the rear suspension.

thus far i have removed the old body and have started to clean the floorpan....... do i have to cut out the rear suspension mounts on the 71 and re-attach them to the 61?????

please advise... i think i may have bitten off more than i can chew!!!!!

most guyz tell me that you can do a swap like that, i was thinking of doing it myself aswell. what are you going to do with the vin on the 60s pan because the 70s didint have a vin on the pan?

i was hoping to just swop the body and voila... a classic daily driver!!!!!!! all these deeeep considerations of which i was unaware... thank you for enlighteneing me...

just realized i may have to go to the police for a clearance etc!!!!

The VIN was on the pan until 72/73

The only difference between the bodies (as far as mounting goes) is the brackets next to the rear shock towers. they need to be shortened to suit the later pan.
If your bug is already licenced just ignore the fact that you do not have a number on the pan as there is still a number in the spare wheel well which is perfectly adequate.

thank yopu for the advice.... at least i won't have to go stand in a queue for ages at the local saps office.

my biggest concern is a strange contraption which runs from one side of the 71 pan to the other, through the body and connects to the body behind and above the shock mount.... this may be a stabilizer bar or something.

the 61 body does not have the attachment for this piece of kit...... unfortunately i do not have a picture to show y'all

What you talking about is the Z-Bar

I think that only the late models had them fitted and the earlier models don't have the holes to fit them

My '67 also doesn't have the mountings to fit them

yes, it is the Z-bar (kafer-cup bar) This COOL product eliminates wheel hop and bent frame horns. Simple BOLT-ON installation fits all Beetle/Ghia rear suspension

The Z-bar is to aid the suspension and prevent the wheels from tucking in during hard cornering, you can get yourself a sway bar that works better than the Z-bar and bolts to the underside of your tranny. You can get away without either provided you don't intend on doing any high speed hard cornering.

No, the Kafer cup bar is completely different from the Z bar
