Unleaded fuel?

Post by Dawie »

Does anyone have experience doing a high distance on unleaded with a type 1 or 4 engine?
Today,at a machining shop saw various cylinderheads that was run on LRP,it had bad deposits, really messed up the combustion chamber. The guy told me this lead replacement fuel is causing lots of problems,in some make of cars more than others, because of the additives that replace the lead.He feels only cars with cast iron heads should use LRP.
Wonder if the same type of additive in LRP is used at the coast as inland?
Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.
Do'nt assume anything- (While doing fault-finding).

In the USA All the gasoline has been unleaded since 1975 or so. Im not sure about the VW's that were made in South Africa but there should not be any problem. VW heads come with hardened valve seats to begin with.... In my 74 beetle in USA I used to drive more than 100,000 km in 3 years and never had any issues with valve seats in a stock head. I have heard that most of your gasoline is Reformate. That should be even better. The gasoline in Ethiopia is horrible and still there is no problem with valve seats.
