Aircooled VW South Africa

I like this and will definitely promote the SA forum there hasbeen a couple of us who spoke about such a forum and never did anything about it.
I have been a VW nut for as long as I can remember
I have had at least one of every type of aircooled vw produced in SA and a few Brazillian ones.
My current garage consists of
a 74 VW SP2
a 74 Puma gt (under reconstruction)
A 52 split bug Under construction (type 4 power)
a 75 split screen pick up (soon to have a bug straight axle kit)
a 60 KG project
2 67 fastbacks
a beach buggy
a 76 2l bus
as you can see i am truly mad
my daily driver is a 2000 1.8 Passat
I also do engines (I just spent R11000 on aline boring machine)
I have an upright conversion for the type 4 which i can honestly claim to be my own work and not a copy of any one elses setup
I have done the Deutz cylinder conversion for the type 4 and even have a few sets of modified cylinders.
I am crazy about old speed parts and hva ammassed a lmost enough parts to build a period EMPI/ Volkspares engine.

I have never had enough cash to have more than one car, so I have been re-doing mine ever since I got it in 1997, changing the looks, engine, brakes, suspension, interior....
Also built a few engine for friends for various applications - daily driver, weekend, race...

I have bought a second car now, on my fathers comments, still have not seen it, dont have anywhere to put it and honestly, dont know what I paid either - my father took the cash out of my bank and bought it. I think it is a 1972 T1, no rust (the important factor). Might get that one on the street in about 5 years. Got to finish mine first.

I personally hate BMW drivers and will do almost anything to keep them in my rear-view mirror - hense building a 2332

One thing I have noted is that the air-cooled breed is a rare one in JHB, not that many enthusiasts around if compared to countries like the US, England, OZ and many others; I try doing my share to change it. A few guys and myself have now started a club in JHB and are having our first run here in JHB on Sunday at our meeting we concluded we would have about 35 rides of all shapes coming, everyone is welcome contact me if you are in the Jhb area and are interested in joining forces. I only have one car as well , '67 Fasty

Although it is not without is minor problems... I wouln't want to drive anything else

Hi all! Great great! At last the SA aircooled community is starting! I am a very avid reader of The samba so having this kind of a forum locally is very nice. I do find these days that the quality of parts is getting worse and it is getting harder to get some parts here locally.

I own a 74 VW Autovilla with the 1800 pancake. All original with 77000 km's as wella s a 63 bug that I "restored" - not totally original, but I cant really afford the R20 000 sprayjobs!

The autovilla is rather unique...I have had it for a year. It is very slow...but great for campouts. Do you experience "ongeduldige" drivers here locally? I have had some very unfriendly gestures when on the road in the autovilla..

I think what will also be nice in our forums here is a tip-off area where we can provide info about good scrapyards, shops, bargains etc.
What do you think?

The reasons you mentioned is the whole reason why I started the forum.
I would love to have my own weekend camper
Talking about speed.... normally the other cars have a hard time to keep up with me

Thanks for the e-mail, I saw Armand (IMPI) here in Bloem yesterday and he told me about the forum. We are all VERY excited!

I am for certain also obsessed with the air cooled methods of transport we call cars. At this stage I have a '71 Manx-style SWB buggy, a 67 Beetle, a 68 Type 3 Fastback and somewhere in a different part of our country I have shares in a 50-something oval window Baja bug.

I am also a very keen collector of model Vee-dubs and Hot Wheels in general and have +/- 800 in my collection at this stage.

This is forum is the beginning of something BIG!!!

Mello yellow here I registered on Thursday last week and still reading all the pages. This site REALLY ROCKS (long overdue in SA)

I own a white and yellow 75 Fleetline Split bought for R100.00 and a red Baja Beach Buggy bought for R2,500.00 love both of them as does my 3 and 9 year old sons, the wife is not to keen on them but so what.
