Poll: Marmite on toast

Marmite is the name given to two similar food spreads, a British version produced in the United Kingdom and South Africa and the other in New Zealand. Marmite is made from yeast extract, a by-product of beer brewing, and is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

The British version of the product is a sticky, dark brown paste with a distinctive, powerful flavour, which is extremely salty and savoury with umami qualities, comparable to soy sauce. This distinctive taste is reflected in the British company's marketing slogan: "Love it or hate it." It is similar to the Australian Vegemite and Swiss Cenovis. Bovril is a similar-looking spread made from beef-extract.

The distinctive product was originally British, but a version with a noticeably different taste has been manufactured in New Zealand since 1919, and this is the dominant version in New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific Islands.

The image on the front of the British jar shows a "marmite", a French term for a large, covered earthenware or metal cooking pot. The British Marmite was originally supplied in earthenware pots, but since the 1920s has been sold in glass jars that approximate the shape of such pots. A thinner version in squeezable plastic jars was introduced in March 2006.

I prefer Bovril. Not so salty and the beefy taste.

Does that mean you would like to have Marmite on your toast?

Apparently miniature worsie tastes like chicken, so you could have a Marmite and Mayo sandwich

For 2 weeks of my life (11 years old in Durban with the Star seaside fund) I had a choice of Marmite or fishpaste for breakfast, didn't go down well. Had a buddy that loved the stuff and fattened himself on my lousy toast during those 2 weeks as we had no choice but to eat up or get punished, so he ate up for me, to this day I cant even stand the smell of either.

I won't even ask how you know that.
I have an old SAS Survival manual that covered urban disasters.
The author stated that one should not be picky about what one finds to eat in a situation where even rescue is almost impossible.
He indicates that cats and small dogs that were once pets are to be looked at as a food source. If memory serves me right, he then proceeds to
comment that it tastes like chicken anyway.

I'll have to dig to find the book, but I'm sure I still have it. Will scan and post if I find it. :)

Personally I find the thought revolting, but "Hard times need hard ways." :)
Ten points to the person who can tell me where that quote comes from.

I dont think China is at any crisis at the moment, and doesn't it happen there all the time anyway, or is it just a myth, "bring on the sweet & sour cat"

Actually, the Chinese eat dog meat or "fragrant" meat as they call it. The Koreans eat cat.

Hi there Wei,
Do you get marmite in Taiwan?
I bet you have met lots of South African people there. Lots of teachers are over there, working with the community !
Greetings

Hi Bill!

:? No, sadly Marmite is quite hard to come by in Taiwan. You do get Bovril here (sometimes) but it's just not the same.

We do have quite a sizeable SA community here. You can check my website (actually mine and Eben's!) if you want more info. http://www.expatSA.com
