100Kilometres to 20Litres

Guys help me out here my bugs gettin like 100ks to 20litres whats it doing, carb problem perhaps? got a mate with a V8 landy with better consumption...???

Good question. I have a similar problem... with my 1974 1600dp Beetle. It's still standard, with standard distributor, carb, air cleaner, etc. I have set the timing, rebuilt the carb, replaced the air cleaner, checked the valves, everything. Even put new spark plugs in. But still, I'm lucky to get 250Km's out of a full tank, and with the fuel price shooting up the roof, I need to get the consumption back to standard, at LEAST, meaning I want about 10 - 12 Km/l, which is the normal consumption for a 1600dp, right? Can it be that the Main Jet in my carb isn't the correct one? (Although I have heard that the Main Jet size won't influence fuel consumption very much, just engine performance and temperature, from running lean or rich)

A few things I'd check first - and double check. These might sound stupid, but they can all play a role individually, combined even worse:
1. How accurate is the odometer of your speedo? Tire & rim size do make a difference. (Compare distance accuracy with GPS, or a another car)
2. Is the choke working, disconnected, or 'choking' all the time?
3. Is the timing set correctly, is the vacuum advance pipe connected, is the vacuum advance working?
4. Is the tank, or 'plumbing' not leaking fuel? (At the filler pipe, hose connections, etc. Fuel pump OK?)
5. Valve clearances set correctly, with engine cold?
6. Plug gaps set correctly, with engine cold?
7. Contact breaker points gap correctly set?
8. Tyre pressure correct?
9. Brakes not binding?
10. Roof rack with surfboards on the roof? (= extra wind resistance)

hi ,i read your introduction post ,maybe your 20cm yoko tyres and your 173km/h top speeds have an influence on your consumption .
only joking with you ,but with fuel consumption like that ill cry driving that everyday to work and back

Hope you not driving on the highway then it could be possible.

I hate going to Pta and stand still on the road fastlane nogal.

Well, that is bad ! My average consumption with my 1970 Vw Bay Window Westfalia Camper 1600 single port is between 9 and 10l/100km (between 10 and 11km/l) at 55/60mph on a 7700km trip last year.

Here are some other tips...
Moderate acceleration
Try to maintain momentum
Dont be a brake jocky(in other words the more you brake the more fuel you'll use, anticipate traffic flow and maintain following distances( Difficult I know when every Tom's, Dicks, Harry wants to push in)
Use the train
Driving at 80kph uses 23% less fuel than driving at 120Kph.
Fill up when its cold, the fuel is more dense therefor you get more bang for buck...
Triple check that you dont have a fuel leak, even a damp fuel hose is waisting your juice..
Short shift your gears, keep revs lower.
Check at what revs you make the most hp, this is also the engine revs at which your engine is most economical.
Drive with the windows closed... Unless you fart and cant stand the smell....
Take the spare battery, chain saw, secret seatcover out the car... Extra weight means extra fuel to lug it around... And for heavens sake get rid of that dead body, it's stinking up the car and the cops are gonna catch you.. Try explaining that at the road block....

well then dude there is your problem.....Everyone knows you got to have sex with a seatcover in your aircooled to get good millage.... Maybe someone could loan you one for the afternoon to help you out....

agreed seatcovers a good idea then she can push after iv been sittin in traffic for an hour. ha ha.
another question lads ive got oil leaking out of the oil breather pipe whats causing it?
