My Beetle's opening mechanism for the boot is faulty or something, I pull the lever and NOTHING! How can I get in there to engage it, open the boot and fix it!

Sometimes if you push a Beetle bonnet sideways at the bottom, in other words so that it twists slightly in its length, it pops open.
...or drop a lit match through the filler cap

I have managed to get a bonnet open after the cable snapped. It was a 60's beetle. I cut the bonnet handle in half with a baby grinder and turned the lower half untill some of the threads of the holding bolt was showing but not enough to undo the bolt completely a little Q20 could help, I would try that first before you cut anything else. I landed up cutting off bits at a time off the handle until I got the bolt threads cut together with the handle. Work carefully and slowly as not to damage the paint or bonnet, I had a spare handle so no problem there. I think the same can be done to a 70's bonnet. If you do do a little damage to the paint there is a handle guard that can be fitted to cover the blemish, I have a stainless steel one, let me know if you need it.
