I REALLY need to replace the p/rod tubes & have had some good advice about NOT using the nylon stuff (EMPI) but I have to for now. Every tube assy has 3 tapered seals - can anyone tell me which way these are suposed to be fitted onto he two parts of the tube? Suppose a tapered tube is represented by < with the taper to the left and > with the taper to the right, then my thinking is as follows:

HEAD <Seal + tube & spring,washer,seal > + larger tube + seal>

I must admit these things look like bad quality stuff but I have to use them.

post some pics, maybe someone will recoginse exactly what you are talking about.

EMPI = Made in China = biggest amount of product = lowest cost = lowest quality

Read the small print at the bottom of the packaging,"KEEP IN COOL DRY PLACE".

I'm not managing this imageshack thing!! Heres another explanation:

the tube consists of two nylon tubes - a narrow tube which fits into a bugger tube. There are 3 seals for every tube assy. The question is which way do the seals fit onto the tube. I have it as one seal at the end of every tube and on in the middle. Now the seals are tapered - do the tapered end face outward when mounted on the tube?

Yes they do

If I remember correct the smaller one of the 2 is at the head side and the thicker one at the block side so the oil can run easilly back in to the motor with out getting stuck going from thick to thin just sit down for 5 min and you will work it out with the taper facing out look at the block and head and you will see how the rubbers will fit
What did you do with the old pushrod tubes that came out have alook at them and see how thier rubbers were on

Thanks Bugger !! - I have never done this before (and lots of other things). One last question - I plan to pull the motor next year (dough ...) so I don't want to take the heads off to replace the p/rod tubes. I plan to remove the rocker arms & p/rods and then to cutt the old bent tubes out. Is this a safe procedure?

Spot on Bugger.

The other way around and the oil returning to the block runs against the centre seal or O-ring. Its definately an easy way to get your engine to leak.
Learnt that the hard way.

Also make sure the seals are of a good quality. Never used IMPI products so I cant comment on that. Its been a long time since I've done this but always used to buy from Lindsay Saker back in the day. The German seals were way better quality than any others.

The tubes where also of diffrent quality. We just yanked ours out after takeing out the push rods. They bent quite easily.
