ITS ALL GONE

Guys
Im still in shock and pain and what else
Wife phoned me Tuesday afternoon to tell me there is a runaway veld fire on its way to our farm . This after we battled with one two weeks ago and stopped it on the neighbours fence (12 hrs of serious fighting)
I rushed home only to find the fire on my doorstep ,we managed to safe the house and the cars but my wonderful pet did not survive it.
The Covin 911 was in a barn where I just finished making moulds of the hole car and I had to see how about R30000 of car and parts go up in flames.
Iwas realy shocked to see how fast a fibre glass car can burn to ashes—and not even a lot of ashes----
Me and my wife had many arguments over the long hours I spend on the car, most of it was between 3h00 and 6h00 in the mornings with other farming things getting my attention at night. When I realised it was all gone I looked at my wife and there were tears in her eyes and I couldn’t stopped myself from crying as well.
Im someone who bleeds to the inside but I managed to let some pain out and it helped a lot.
So now I have to close the book on my Covin build and regroup as they say in the army. Thank you Impi for the copy of the Covin manual you gave me and thank you FFF for the picture of the cabriolet you send me for inspiration. Bugger your advice on engine choich is appreciated
A word of warning to you guys with fibre glass cars before you do anything go out and buy a decent fire extinguisher as you would not belief how fast everything burns to ashes
So for now I ll sit in the corner and watch you guy play and wait for the pain to go away
Thing is I cougt a terrible cold/flue with the first fire and was as sick as a dog with the second fire and now Im battling with my health and there is no time toeven think obuot the tragedy
Suppose its time to stop and take stock of my life and dreams Image
When I still had high hopes

Hi Baron.
So sorry to hear about your rotten luck. But as Vader says. These are all things that cuts you too the bone but at least you live to tell the tale. Bad things happen to good people unfortunately. Read about the ambulance driver last week who was called to the scene of an accident and had to get the body of his own teenage daughter from under a police vehicle that jumped the traffic lights and hit her on her scooter in the Strand. :(
I wish you and your family all the best with the recovery and I hope your health improves to such an extent that you will dust yourself off and start thinking of your next project. :)

All the best.

Hi Baron

I am really very sorry to hear about your loss. One tends to get attached to these cars in ways that other people don't understand.
Bestaluck on the recovery process (emotionally, and physically).

I heard on the radio recently that these veld fires are more often the work of arsonists - land reform issues that they don't agree with. Any person found to intentionally start a fire, should be shot on sight

Baron, I am sorry to hear about this. My heart goes out to you all. Hope that the damages are limited($$$) by insurance. The worst thing I think is to still see some 'parts' that have not burned yet. If only fire could destroy fiberglass COMPLETELY. I dont mean this in a bad way. But when you see part of a 'part', you say 3ARgh, it used to be a fender/whatever. Where as you only see ashes, you say, "here used to be a car). Makes sense?

I really share your pain, more than you think. You lost your project.... My parents-in-law, beginning of June, lost their car AND house! Now they 'live' in a holiday home :( And it also started with vandalism/arson of the neighbour's car. They live in a downhill street. The tires melted and the car slid down, touching their car. Now with two cars burning, they slid downhill and burned by bro-in-law's car too. With three cars burning in front of the house, the window frames and door started to catch fire due to heat. And then the roof caught fire and the rest is history. I only tell you this, so that you know, things DO get better. Just give it time(ffs, that is the WORST news/advice someone can give in a time like this. But unfortunately, the truth can not be denied :( )

Anyway, sit back, and recover first physically. The other things can wait. Health is more important.

I am no farmer at all, and dont really have a lot of experience with these kind of things. But you fellas that live on farms/plots/etc, please make sure that their is not a lot(none would be better) overgrowth(like grass/trees etc) CLOSE around sheds, houses, garages etc. So that in hopes, the fire would exhaust itself somewhat before it can set fire to roofs etc. Sometimes it takes fire to fight fire. Burn long grass etc around garages, to create a 'safe zone'. Firebrigades use this technique in forests as well.... That is all I can suggest :(

Best of luck with the recovery

Hi Baron
I wish I could find something to say that might help - there isn't anything right now.
I hope that in time you are able to find something to let you dream again.....
Small consolation, but I think you can count on the support of a lot of people on here.
Barry
