Pas gekoop, Sat gery

Pas gekoop, Sat gery - an Afrikaans expression used quite often when I was much younger. Your best friend's dad would for example drop him off at school in a brand new VW Passat, and you would comment
'Hmmm - Pas gekoop, Sat gery!' Literally translated it would mean something like 'Driven to smithereens, although just recently bought' - there are some Afrikaans expressions you just can't translate directly
Well, in 1981 Shell SA took a Passat that has been driven more than 5000km with Shell oil in the engine, and
drained the oil
According to the ad the poor old (new at the time) Passat did another 150km (minus the Shell oil) before it 'failed to proceed' (no further mentioning of what happened to the car). Interesting enough, there is no small print stating something like 'Shell SA does not advise driving your Passat without oil' - it only says 'Independently tested'. Those were the days...

Those Passat CLIs were awesome! It had the 2144cc fuel injected Audi 5 cylinder engine. The sound of that engine is simply magical!

When the Cli 16V Jetta II was released (I think around '86), my Dad said he's gonna wait for the Passat to come out with the same engine and buy it for us - but the Passat range was discontinued shortly afterwards

It's sad that you don't see many Passats on the road today.....
I like the early 2 door "Fastback" Passat...

They were lovely cars to drive.
Problem with those 5cyl Audi's & VW's they tended to self combust without warning. In the 90's you could walk into any scrapyard and find at least one partially or completely burnt out.

I believe that it was a design fault of the J-Jetronic system? The hoses used to perish and so your car used to burn....

Both my Quattro and Coupe Gt have the 5 cylinder engins, the Ur had the turbo MC block and my CGT has the KX block, the KX block is the same that was used in the Passats. It is a bullit proof engine but not very tunable, best I know of was 185 hp. On the MC I have heard of close to 700 hp. They say if you have a 5 cylinder engine you don't need to listen to the radio.

The 5 cylinder engines do sound awesome.
They also fitted them in the Kombi and you got it in 2.3, 2.5 and 2.6.
