Hi
Some advise please!!! I'm in the process of getting Police Clearance for the 64 beetle (VIN is unknown on registration) but found that since the VIN was NEVER on the system since first registration it's a bit more complex. The friendly public servants at Centurion where I took it for clearance told me to take the vehicle to the Vehicle Identification Unit in PTA West. I did this and the even more friendly, and not to mention helpful, servant over here did not really want to help but eventually told me to go and take photos of the VIN and Engine numbers and bring it to them. This is what I know thus far and I will be doing it this week. Now my question - Does anybody know the process? Once I have given then these photos what will happen? Will I be given something or will I leave and get some notification in the post? Any idea how long this normally takes?
Thanks for any help.

Has your car got any identification numbers?
Look for the data tag behind the sparewheel and the number punched on the tunnel just in front of the gear linkage inspection cover under the rear seat - the engine number is stamped under the generator/alternator stand.
If your car has any of these, clean it nicely so that it is legible. The "helpful public servants" (I believe this is an oxymoron - or depending who you are dealing with, just a moron) at Pretoria West must physically inspect these numbers and check it on their database. If nothing flags on the database, they must then issue you with the clearance certificate.
Just double check their data - they once wanted to impound an Isuzu that I had owned from new because their system listed it as stolen because the (oxy)moron read the number wrong.
If your car has none of these, You will have to register the car as a Code 3 - Built up vehicle. For that you wil need invoices for the parts used in the build, as well as sworn statements by yourelf as well as the previous owner/representative stating that you are entitled to the "parts" and that nothing was obtained fron "midnight spares".

It's not something you are going to resolve overnight, it's going to take a loooong time and much time waisting, and there is no guarantee that you will be able to get things sorted, I have been down that road and now refuse to buy anything that hasn't got some form of official licencing papework that matches what is printed in the metal.
Dean has been trying to sort out his split bus , going the right route, its over a year and going strong.
Good luck, hope you come right.

Yes it's got all the numbers and they were inspected at Centurion.jmvv wrote:Has your car got any identification numbers?
Yip that is what I thought but not so. As i said, I had the car at Centurion where SAPS inspected and noted the VIN and Engine number. The system was down so when I returned later I was given the forms that I completed and also one the says they have inspected and told to go the PTA West. Nobody was interested in inspecting the vehicle in PTA West. I was told to bring photos of the VIN and Engine number. You understand my confusion and frustration now. If there is a fixed process that can be followed I will follow it but they all have different stories. When I return with the vehicle and photos later this week I am sure I will be told something different.jmvv wrote:If your car has any of these, clean it nicely so that it is legible.
