There is a little metal plate on top of the tunnel, right behind the handbrake lever which gives you access to the gear shift linkage (you have to lift the carpet to see it though). The chassis number should be stamped here, right in front of the plate. If it is blank (certain early 70's Beetles), the number will be riveted on a loose plate to the bodyshell in the spare wheel well in the front ofthe car.
