Fuel regulator...

Post by Merlin »

I need some info please, from our tech-Minded members...

Fuel regulators...

What exactly are they?

Where do they fit?

How do they fit?

Approximate cost and availability?

I'm about to install twin carbs on my bug, and have been recommended a max running pressure of 2 bar.

Cheers, N.

Fuel regulator is fitted after the fuelpump and filter. So it sits between the filter and your carbs. Some regulators have a built in t-piece ie. one inlet and two outlets(one for each carb)

That being said, if you are using a stock mechanical pump you most propably wouldn't need a regulator but it is a good idea for electric pumps.

The one i have is made by Holly and I think it set me back close to R200.

Kewl; thanks.

Rui and I were speaking the other day, and he reckons a stock pump runs close to 3/3.5 bar, hence me wanting to install a regulator...

Is it just a simple addition to the fuel line?

Do I buy different strength regulators, or do you set them to the desired amount?

Is this something Midas, for example, would carry?

My apologies for the barrage of questions. ;)

As an aside, my fuel filter is fitted to the line before it enters the engine bay, and hence the fuel pump, [behind the L rear wheel], which is a good precaution against engine bay fires should the fuel hose come loose there. :)

Thanks, N.

A stock pump can push anything up to 3.5lb, in most cases a lot less. If you are worried it is pumping too much you can always shim up the pump pedestal with a thicker paper gasket or two, that in turn will reduce pressure. If you are running a elec fuel pump I would recommend a regulator a stock pump will do for the twin carbs, no regulator needed. The regulator will save the needle & seat from pressures it can't cope with, and cause flooding, high consumption and a bad running motor. I have run a stock pump on a set of Weber 42 DCNF's no problem, the revs were 5800 max and was a 2020cc motor. Nick in your case no need for a elec pump or a regulator.
I also ran my Kadrons on a 1641 with stock pump no problem, check to see if the needle & seat is 100% and no leaks.
For what it's worth, ignorance has no limits ......

Dude.... psi!!! 2 bar is a bit extreme untless you are looking at fuel injection.
Webers usually want around 3 to 4 psi. If you do decide to go for a elec pump, the Facet has a built in regulator at almost exactly wht the webers want (cant remember the figure). I ran my Webers for quite a while with no regulator and they were very happy.

OK, thanks for all the input everyone. :)

Just bought a sweet set of 4[4?]mm Kadrons from a mate of Rui's.

They'll go in soon, along with J-pipes, a new 4-into-1 s/steel exhaust, and soon, an igniter/1.9 Dizzy.

My thanks to Bill [& Wade :) ] too, for their help offline with regards to this matter. :)

It is much appreciated guys!

EDIT: Anyone in Jo'burg familiar with the installation of t/carbs?

I'm all out of help for the time being, and my carbs/exhaust are looking very forlorn off of the car...hehe. :)
