Draw through turbo setup
Yes i know ve spoken about this topic before but after reading about johanb's turbo setup in the one thread im interested in it again, i wanna know is?is it fairly streetable?how do you seal the turbo?and what is needed to do the whole conversion ie. Fuel regulators,pumps,ect...and i know some people are gonna say its not worth it but its just a general thread were i wanna learn something even if its that this is a horrible way of turboing...ps johanb do you have some pics of that setup you built?

Re: Draw through turbo setup
Suck through turbo is one of the eaisest to setup.. the only thing to keep in mind is the turbo must have a possitive seal,,
You will have a carb.. then the turbo and that will feed the head (Intake manifold -- standard intake manifold will do with a standard cam)) I have tried with a intercooler but the petrol form pockets in the tank and let the motor flutter if you excell all of a sudden.
You can run a normal sidedraft but need to modify the inlet valve as you tend to run the fuel bowls dry if you have a long high boost period. If you run the sidedraft I would suggest you install a facuum release valve just after the carb to relieve vacuum if you close the throttle. (Don't have to if you don't want to). The SU carb have it build in on the butterfly. Pesonally I like the SU as it is the smoothest turbo you will have,, less shetlins that the sidedraft, but a pleasure to drive
What is nice about this type of turbo charging you don't need fancy regulators and intercooler, normal petrol pump does the trick.. Just a word of advise.. don't take the carb to far from the turbo as the vacuum that the turbo pull will freeze the carb up on cold days -- talking about 1/4 meter away.. lock the distributor and run at 19deg.. Ask if you have any other questions.
I have build this on a golf and A14 Nissan motors, but the principal stay the same. On the golf 8V I used the 16V oil pump for the exstra oil and on the nissan I used a standard oil pump,, must be honest on a beetle motor I don't know if the standard pump will do.
I might build a turbo motor for the Split,, will then give pics as I don't have here at the moment
I have played a lot with this setup with plenty school fees,, will gladly help with advise if you need some

Re: Draw through turbo setup
good point there....how do you get oil to all the parts that need oil?and this positve seal?do you buy a turbo with one or do you do it to the turbo/ive read on the net they talk about carbon and dynamic seal turbos....o and is this setup streetable ie.go to work/tech/university and back everyday?

Re: Draw through turbo setup
It is a IDF down draft that is sealed for a blow through system. The air filter is also sealed with the dumpvalve on the side , the oilpressure for the turbo you get from the port where the oilpressure gauge screws in and back to a flange that gets mounted where the fuelpump use to be.

Re: Draw through turbo setup
Oil you get from the oil pressure switch, you can 'T' it from there, you can ask a Hydrolic place to make up the pipes. Solid on the intake and flex on the return. On the return pipe insure it goes between the lobes of the crank.. And yes you can go on holiday with a setup like this,, it is like driving any other vechile. Very reliable with something exstra under the hood.
The possitive seal .. It is a seal on the intake side of the core housing,, best is to ask a turbo house to install it if you not sure. Very simple to replace,, Is a lil pricy (Don't know what they will be going for today) but worth every penny.
Just another piece of advise.. run sinthetic oil,, normal oil tend to boil in the turbo return (Heat causes it) and restric the return flow that causes most turbo failures.
You wont be disapointed íf you go this route. You will have years of driving pleasure..

Re: Draw through turbo setup
Hey Dubster Dave Rowley its the best one to chat to about turbo setups he can supply you with all the parts
i went to his shop once and saw a turbo ready idf weber carb for sale there.
Im also thinking about going the turbo route
I remember seeing something at http://www.aircooled.net about using a 30mm oil pump with a turbo on a type 1 motor
