Karmann or 356

Post by ROY VS »

I have been toying with the idea to get my hands dirty for quite some time now. Time, space and finances and space all seem to be in harmony now so hopefully I will take the plunge soon.

However I have 2 options and i havent made my mind up yet.

Do I go for a Karmann rebuild or a 356 Kit?

Not having done anything on this scale before I may not be aware of all the pros and cons.

I am tending towards the 356 as the probability of rust on a Karmann may be a bit too much for me to tackle.

Any thoughts? what would you rather drive?

The 356 would be the better option, the one reason, rust you have figured out, the other, parts availability, everyting for the 356 is available over the counter locally, and lastly I think a well built 356 looks far cooler than a KG.
For what it's worth, ignorance has no limits ......

Check out the project threads.FlatFourFan built a 356 as did RabidAnt.

Didi did a KG resto.Gsi31099 also started a resto which JNP bought.

Read through the threads, that may also help you decide.

I tend to agree even though I have a KG waiting for some attention! I bought an abandoned KG project for R10k with all the chroming, windows etc. If you build a descent KG you will most likely spend the same on both options.

The two main problems I have with doing a 356 is it's a two seater and the soft top.

 Build one of each!! :D

If I got a Karmann for 10k it would jump at it. ( and do the 356 later  ) the ones i have seen are in the range of 30 - 40k.

Donor beetle I am looking at is 7k - I like the idea off all parts available off the shelf for my first big project.

next question would be classic or Sebring :?:
