I know of someone that is busy building a bug rack that is turning out well im sure if your local handy man had a pipe bender and the rite size materials he could get it rite.The person i know of has a bug roof rack that he is usin as a template.

IMHO, I would never fit one of those boot-lid racks. What makes me cringe, is to think how those rubber feet will scuff the paint when you go on a long trip with some load on the rack

zero not if its tightened down properly it wont damage the paint thats why the rubber is there so that you dont have a metal on matal situation

I am not so sure!! Do you have one and can talk of personal experience? No dig at you, just asking.
In my view, if you tighten it too much, you can dent the body work. If you dont, it moves around. Loose loose situation.
On a similar note. In the past I have tighten down other kinds of stuff, to the point where these industrial type ratchets dont 'ratchet' anymore.... And the part still scuffs with rubber 'protection'. This has also happened to my motorcycle on a trailer. Just remember, if two pieces (no matter what we are using as an example here) are not "made one" (like in 'mating' them permanently, for exampe welding), there will ALWAYS be mvoment between them.
Also, I am not even talking of small dust particles that (does) get under those rubber feet while driving! You might not see it with/on one trip, but I promise you, if you would drive your car everyday with that rack on without taking it off for a year, you will see what I mean. This is exagerated by making an example with a one year time period, but that is what happens, even on small trips.
At the end of the day, I think we will probably have to agree that we disagree.
