HI guys... I have decided to build a strong flat4 engine instead of going the rotary route....
So the plan is to build a 2000cc plus N/A engine... so... uhm
Can you guys please help me by giving me some specs/parts that I need and that I can look at?
Which motor must I buy, to start building this Monster that I have got planned?
What sort of power can these engines make? 150hp? or am I reaching tooo high?
Do you think its worth it buying one of those vw engine performance books from kalahari?

I paid about 20k to go up 40hp, so R500 per hp increase above standard. And a 80hp increase cost me 40k, same... But that's having it done, not doing it myself. However, labour was not a big percentage of the cost. My next 80hp is costing me another 40k, so it more or less bears out.
There are a lot of engine projects with loads of information, do a search, TonyZ has a good one a 2332cc called Suicide. Have a read threw Whispers from the DarkSide there is a lot of info and a few laughs. Look in the Technical Guides as there are quite a few threads on this subject which will answer a lot of you questions. Once you have done that and have a clearer idea of what is needed, then post your ideas of what you have in mind and we can help you in the areas you need.

But anyway, let me not discourage you entirely, nor avoid the question. As an oversight, I had an engine built, 2270 liter give or take a tot (stroked and large pistons), 044 heads and twin 44mm IDFs (ie big valves and easy breathing), Engle 120 cam, special valve springs, lightened fly wheel (response and revs) a 009 dizzie with electronic ignition and a high voltage coil (for accurate spark, as good as you get without a vacuum signal, except if you spend much more money) and an electric fuel pump for reduction of fire risk, amongst other things. O, and a Kennedy clutch, for obvious reasons.
I had it on the dyno when it had done less than 150km (so it was stiff and we didn't push past 5500rpm) and it made 106kW at 5500 rpm, and had not yet peaked, and 211Nm at around 2700rpm, if I recall. If I extrapolated the curve to 6500, it would have peaked at 110kW probably, not more. So 146hp.
Only the case was reused after machining for oil flow and stroke and larger bore sleeves, and the flywheel after lightening and doweling. Everything else was new.
There are lost of different parts, brand names, products, etc etc, but the recipe remains more or less the same, as does the price. This cost me 40k.
My other engine is a 1914cc with 041 heads and 36mm IDFs and an Engle 110 cam with 1:1.25 rockers (left over from previous mod). So not stroked but with large sleeves. It makes, on the same dyno, 60kW and 189Nm. But it lives in a beach buggy, so is lots of fun and very driveable. I rate this engine mod very high. It's the same as Vader's, or at least, the sub assembly is. This cost me 20k.
The only difference is mine has SP heads and makes 55Kw & 155Nm of talks!! oh and a single carb... In total The Force cost me 30k long story, very sad you cna read about it in The Whispers ......
Andrino has complete motors for sale at good prices 10k upto bring bank manager with... A 1917cc like Ron's would cost you 12-15k and the one we saw at the George Motor show in Feb is 40k!!! Give him a call if your interested and want a motor NOW NOW!!!

I could tell a long story here... but I got good results from high ratio rockers and a good 4-1 exhaust, they gave me the best step change after a good dyno tune.
Then, if you want to spend some more, change the carbs, single or twin, AND the heads, larger valves.
After that you might as well go and fit a cam, and increase cc by either larger sleeves or stroking or both. Cost goes up exponentially at this stage. Short and sweet, my opinion.
