Dusty - the 68 Squareback

Post by jmvv »

As mentioned elsewhere, I found this 68 Variant under a car port in Pretoria, where the original owner parked it in 1985.

When my wife heard about my latest folly she told me:"you are a stupid old man, but I will buy you the car for your birthday."

So on Saturday, August 22, we arranged a trailer and Myself, Andrè and his father-in-law set off to collect the car.

Image

By 11:00 Saturday the car was in the shop.

All the missing bits were packed into boxes in the car.

Generally, the body is not too bad. There are some rust issues on the top and bottom corners of the front fenders

The upholstery is in very good condition for it's age

The most important thing however, is that the car is still registered and that the license is paid up

First order of business is to get the engine running. according to the P.O. the engine is a genuine VW factory rebuild and has only about 10000km on it since fitting.

The gearbox is sick (thats the reason the car was parked in 85) so a visit to a certain Dr Bugger is in the cards.

The brakes need to be overhauled, and seeing as I have a Beetle disc brake kit lying around, I think that might be a wise upgrade.

I would like to retain the wide five configuration and I have a set of wide five adapters for the disc brake kit.

I think I will widen the rims to 5,5J and have the outers chromed with painted centers and flat hubcaps (which I got together with the trim rings as part of the deal)

As the upholstery is so nice, when it comes to the time to paint it, I think a nice complimentary colour will be chosen to work with the ivory upholstery. Maybe metallic black ala VW Polo or Jaspis Blue like on some Mitsubishis

Nice, early square back !!!!!!!!!!!!! If these dont float your boat then you might as well give up! Supercool and hugely practcal every day, I would love one!

Always thought one done as a woody wagen with wood effect on the mid panels would be cool also!

Twobucs has now gone to my partner in crime, Andre (andre_vdm). As he is highly skilled and shares my vision for the car, it is in good hands.
