BUILDING THAT PERFECT MOTOR...help!!!

Without putting in a cam and cw crank it wont matter much because the motor can only rev so high...open the motor up do the cam,counterweight the crank and get the bottom end solid,fly cut the heads to bump up compression and have the combustion camber cleaned up and have the ports done,the power is in the heads,then find a set of pdsit carbs or something maybe a centre mount dcd or twins would be better,by building a solid bottom end you can always if the time is right put in a big bore kit for more power.

I'm busy planning a 2056cc Type 4 engine build. At this stage, all I can say is that it's going to cost me a LOT less than building a 2.0 Type 1

I spoke to the guys at volkspares yesterday, and the said that the type4 route is WAY more expensive!!!

But I think im going to keep the original 1600 motor and turbo charge it and FI .
It seems like I will be able to do that for about 15K, and expect about 70kw on the wheels....

to build a small mild T4 is cheaper than building an equivalent T1. Building a big T4, thats big bucks.

Ditto tony,remember a type four already comes in a large dissplacement so you can buy a 2l type four readly were to get a 1600 type 1 to almost that size you need a 94mm big bore kit...$$$$$!so yes on the type 4 regrind the cam,FI,even turbo if you can...i think you could do quite alot with 15k on type 4 to plak a smile on your face?hey blitz?tony?

well it makes sense starting with the type4...
What would the cost of this be then, to buy one? and what is needed to fit this in a bug?

spnding 15K on a T4 will get you an engine balance, new pressure plate, exhaust and cam and maybe carbs, not much else. You still need to do an upright cooling conversion.

In my opinion, tkaing a stock 1600 and spending 15K on it will give you a lot more smiles than spending 15K on a T4 2000cc.

Cheapest (good) option.
1600. Counterweight the crank. 110 cam. Worked heads. 36IDFs. 8.5:1CR, exhaust, filter pump, single HD springs and cro-mo pushrods. Balance everything. Stock clutch and pressure plate.

Not gonna argue with that..i am a type 1 person myself...my 1717cc is almost same as tony mentioned except it has 9 to 1 comp. Ratio but my BIGGEST hold back is that i am still using the stock carb...when i pull away it has like a small flat spot because its got a wild cam in and then its like two stroke and starts to scream but thats where the small carb screws everything up just when the cam really wants to start to working it cant...but even for those few thousand revs the carb gives enough petrol...

It F@CKS off!!it really does like tony said 15k can get alot done...i am really happy with my motor i just need to put on my centre mount 38 downdraught and it should go like the clappers!you wont be dissapointed!

Have a look at http://www.aircooled.net and scroll to their technical library. They give a lot of valuable tips on getting the most from a 1600. I have spent more than R80k on parts and a hell of a lot of time and engineering in building my 2276 engine.
It hasn't even started yet

I recon you can get 80 - 100HP out of the 1600 engine with bolt ons that would cost you less than R15k, but if you go deeper with big carbs and camshaft you could get 110 to 120HP for about R25k. That is big horsepower for a beetle, you will run circles around almost any 2 litre car.

I did mention those articles they are a good read...here is my final option...1600 (if possible that you could get a big bore kit 88mm machine in for 1675cc bore them out to 89mm for a 1717cc, 90.5mm for a 1776cc, 92mm for 4 1835cc,and 94mm for a 1915cc) counterweight crank, w110/120 cam, cro-moly pushrods, HD valve spring,worked heads,9:1 comp. ratio,and the most important thing the carburation a motor like this wants PETROL!so invest in some good carbs other wise all of the above are worth nothing...

I'm not in favour of boring out. Big bore kits sure, but don't make the sidewalls thinner.

Me to but the 88mm are very thick...mine are running fine at 89mm bore
