Re: Official baja bug thread, lets talk bajas
Well it all happened a long, long time ago. My passion for VWs started with the 412 Fastback my dad had when I was small, and the 412 Variant my Mom had a few years later. We also had a brand new 1.9 water cooled Microbus, which was only used for Sunday drives and holidays. Saw the Herbie movie when I was very small, and got hooked on Beetles.IMPI wrote:just dont get pine started........
We moved from Johannesburg to George in 1985, and that was more or less also the time of the explosion of the Baja phenomenon in South Africa (if you look at all the Baja kit magazine ads of the era). Today I know that the Bajas in George (and there were A LOT), were most probably built to try and save the rusty Beetles that spent their time near the coast, but to me a Baja was a symbol of freedom, independance and the good life.
One of my friends' brother, who much older, and a local surfer at Victoria Bay near George, had this Baja in the late 80's. Wasn't even a 'proper' Baja - if I recall it had cut metal fenders, not fibre glass. A few times we were allowed to join them for a ride to the beach with the specific instructions 'we don't know you' when we got there. I was hooked for life. This is the only pic I got of it, which I took one Sunday afternoon when we took the dogs to the beach. Note my Mom's Variant in the background, and the Bay belonging to the old 'Fancourt Hotel' - today a big Golf estate.

I also had a 1:10 scale radio control Tamiya Sand Scorcher - a small racing Baja Bug, which I bought second hand through the Free Ads in the Car magazine, with my saved pocket money. (If I recall, it was around R 120 for it - a helluva lot of money back then). I had many hours of fun with it, and re-painted it several times. Because it had a sealed chassis and electrics, it could run through water, and was almost indestructible. It looked more or less like this one:

Ironically, a mint and original unbuilt Sand Scorcher will set you back a LOT of money these days, this one is currently on e-Bay for $ 3200

I love baja's. My first car ever was a baja. I bought it in 1994 for R1250. Had it for about 2 years then sold it cause i thought i needed a better car. Then i bought a ford escourt. But luckilly i came to my sences and swopped it for a beetle a while later. Sorry, dont have any pics.

Re: Official baja bug thread, lets talk bajas
My first car was and is still a baja it was a beetle thats been in the family for 30 plus years but was in a accident in the late eighties so was converted in a baja then its on loan to a family member though. The baja bug thing also bit my brother a few months ago so he brought a nice baja based on a 1977 1600S beetle.
I love baja bugs and am considering buying a buggered up one to fix and use daily again

I love these pictures....the thing I love about Baja's, is that many are totally different but all have beautiful detail!
