Re: £40k Bus !!!! Insane
Guess who is trawling the BUS forums. You have to admire the work that's gone into that bus !!
Here's a thought, and I don't want to start another debate on the E word, BUT, perhaps just perhaps, we should not complain too loudly about bus prices locally, becuase there is nothing wrong with the skill in the country, and we pay half to a 1/4 of what these guys pay to have work done on their busses. Sure, parts that are imported will cost an arm and a leg, but local labour is lekker !
This brings me to an idea, if someone is willing to spend 50K sterling on a bus restoration, perhaps we should offer a south-african bus restoration specialist service. We ship the bus here, restore to customer spec, then ship it back. That way, local labour makes the money, we can order parts in bulk bringing the prices down for the rest of the local guys, and we bring forex into the country?!
Or am I living in a dream world?
(of course we would need a number of busses to make this happen, one or two won't allow the economies of scale required to do this)
Sorry for the lengthy hijack.

Re: £40k Bus !!!! Insane
I'd love to have a resource here that lists the mutts nuts of people who can do stuff to cars. Bodywork, paint, engine, interior etc. That bus forum is pretty impressive, those guys take it to another level and the quality of work is often nipple standing.
To get on the list, the person would have had to have been used by a few members and seen to talk the talk besides walk the walk.

Re: £40k Bus !!!! Insane
Now I'm a bus owner, I'd like to ideally get it dumped into acid to remove all the crap, they are all over the UK but I've yet to hear anyone here use one.
How do you all remove every ounce of paint, filler, crap, dogs, spiders, dirt, old ladies etc?

Re: £40k Bus !!!! Insane
I don't think they have acid baths big enoigh for a bus here.....sandpaper, paint stripper and time is the best way.
Be careful if you decide to get it sandblastered!

Re: £40k Bus !!!! Insane
I havent had to go down that route yet, my busses as pretty rust free, I used paint stripper on the dodgy places, but thats it,
Will probably have to check the panel once Im back, think that might have rust and really dodgy areas, but not to sure

Re: £40k Bus !!!! Insane
I think you'll find that Dingleberry established our (SA's) reputation when it comes to doing resto work for the poms. Between him and the bush mechanics who sent our buses to the scrapyards in the first place, SA buses in the UK really only have a (comparative) lack of rust to recommend them.karmakoma wrote:...This brings me to an idea, if someone is willing to spend 50K sterling on a bus restoration, perhaps we should offer a south-african bus restoration specialist service. We ship the bus here, restore to customer spec, then ship it back. That is so true the busses overhere are really badly rusted, they look real nice from far but upclose they look
