I will soon be starting on a project to create a registry for split busses. The idea is to provide a service like the Type 3 / Type 34 Registry where owners can add their busses to a maintained registry that records details for reference purposes. I know that there are already several different registers out there, what we would like to do with this one is pull all of the data together.
The project once finished will also be rolled out to the Type 34 Registry to update the currently broken database and reinstate the lost functionality caused by broken code.
The Splitbus register will be run separately from Vdubber and will be located at http://www.splitbus.com
If you have any ideas for inclusion, please post a reply here or in the thread located over at Vdubber

Re: Splitbus Register
Security would be a big issue for me, how would you protect the information that is being supplied? Is it available to anyone or just registered users?

Re: Splitbus Register
This is a good question, and a big issue for many as a lot of owners don't like posting VIN or registration data. Privacy is also a concern.
To add or update a record users will be required to register, this will hopefully prevent spam posting, additionally we will also make it that limited information is shown to non-registered users - perhaps just a picture, or a teaser - this encourages people to register to see more.
Unfortunately the VIN is the only piece of data that is consistent through the life of the vehicle, and this provides the only real way to catalog the information accurately. For those who want to find their bus, the best thing to search with would be the VIN.
We could make it so that users can choose to hide the VIN, this way if someone searches for a VIN that is hidden, instead of returning the record, it returns a message that the VIN is hidden. The user then has two options - contact the site admin, or contact the previous owner and get them to release ownership / unhide the VIN.
The record can still be browsed, but no VIN or registration info will be displayed.
Regarding personal details, all we will require is a nickname, state + town. People can use their real names if they like, and add in more info if they feel the need, and although we require an email for registering with the site, no email addresses will be published. If someone wants to get in touch with the recorded owner, they can send a message via the site, the owner can then choose to respond either via the sites email, by leaving a comment on the site or via direct email.
Hope this answers your question.

Re: Splitbus Register
Thanks Mick,
I think a default deny VIN is the best way forward. It would stop the scrapers from gaining access, to what is possibly the most valuable part of the car and also give a sense of security to all those involved.
Look forward to seeing it in action, any idea of go live date?

Re: Splitbus Register
At the moment I'm reviewing the outline that I originally put together for the Type 34 Registry, plus asking for contributions and ideas at forums such as AVWSA. When I've collected in the info, I will add the features etc into the code.dsan wrote:Thanks Mick,

I should be able to put together a basic data entry form on a web page and database pretty quickly - This could probably be up within the next few weeks. This can then be further developed to include the ideas and suggestions that everyone puts forward.
At the moment, I'm waiting for the domain transfer for splitbus.com, as soon as this happens, I will get a basic page up and running.

Re: Splitbus Register
How about hiding the last three digits of the VIN? That way anyone can get all the info they need from the VIN while not compromising privacy/security.

Also a good idea - kind of like credit card details are shown on receipts.fig wrote:How about hiding the last three digits of the VIN? That way anyone can get all the info they need from the VIN while not compromising privacy/security.
