I want to say BIG THANK YOU to Barry for organising the Metal Meet on my request. Well, not realy a request.... more like " 'n Skimp" I mentioned to Barry that I will be coming to SA during end Sept., beginning Oct. And he made the effort to clean his workshop, move tools around AND get people to pitch up. Thank you again.

It is a shame that I am not so good with "names on the first day", especially when one gets stuck in the whole day moering metal into a shape that it does not realy want to. So you spend so much time with your own thoughts and "hardegat staal", that you dont get to talk THAT much with the other people. I appologise.

All in all, I think it was a GREAT day. I managed to beat metal into something I wanted. Well, not 100%, but I was getting there. At a point I got 'frustrated' and tried to STARE the metal into shape. That didnt work too well. Barry noticed there was much less hammering and came over to 'have a word'. Long story short, I tried to bend a complete fender (three 'directions') out of a flat sheet!! Barry advised me that I am asking too much from one piece of flat steel. He told me to think about my projects better. He would'e done it in 3 pieces..... I then 'gave up the fight' and thought of another challenge!! How about rolling the lip over? Barry then showed me how to roll wire in the lip. Cool trick!!

At about 4 or so, I stood with a "as far as you can go" piece, and thought "What now?" This is when I joined the 'hubcap - crew' and smaked a bowl out of an off-cut.... Needless to say that I understood a bit better how these things work, and knocked it out in not such a long time! Then our 'token coloured man' accused me of stealing his idea! Us two for some reason were on the same wave lenght, until he cracked his Friday-Saturday-Sunday joke

All in all, thanks again Barry for such an awesome day!!! Oh, and just for the record...... Sorry once again about the fibreglass mini-roadster comment!!!!

Hey Theo - it was an absolute pleasure sir!!
As you know, I am passionate about getting more people doing this kind of thing. I will bend over backwards to help anyone who shows even a fraction of the interest and commitment you did.
Organising the meet was no problem!!
You are welcome at my shop anytime, and don't sell yourself short - you certainly have all you need (besides a couple thousand hours practice    ) to master metal shaping.

Ok so here are some of the pics I took. With Barry's permission, I will post pics of his machines.....

Here is the fibreglass mini roadster.....

Oops, did I say fibreglass? I am SORRY  Nothing but metal in this shop!!! The detail and quality of work on this little 'car' is incredible. If I was only to judge his skills by this pedal car.... he will have my HotRods to work on!!!

Here is me 'test fitting' my fender to check if it follows the tyre properly.....

Shame I didnt take photos of it when it was still 'mangled' due to some hammer punishment!! By no means perfect. The photo makes it look better than in real life. But not to bad for a newbie...

Some action shots of some of the 'members'. And one of our "token coloured guy" in action too

And here is the King of the Castle sitting on one of his many thrones....

The famous Volksrod...

The amount of work that has gone into this car takes my breath away! I have great respect for Barry's skills :hangloose:

Here are some pics of other metal porno  :hangloose:

Ok then, here are some pics of Barry's machines.... I mainly took pics of these for reference for myself...

This machine, for those of you NOT in the know si called the English Wheel, and it saw a LOT of action the weekend.
Image

Image
The yellow one is a beaut! Work on my part was done on all three..... Yes, there was ANOTHER one! The 'baby wheel'...
Image

Anyone got a spare tractor rim doing nothing????
Image
Here it is put to use properly.... This stand had many dollies that could be put in place and then smooth/slap metal on...

Some close-up shots of 'The DADDY' of the E-wheels...
Image
Image

Although I looked forward working on an E-Wheel, I didnt just want to jump on it... I wanted to get to grips with the hand tools. Now unfortunately I didnt take photos of all the other hand tools... Stupid me. After some time with the hand tools, I jumped on the machines.... I will later see if I have pics of the 'finished' fender and bowl....

And of course, Barry's hand tools has inspired me to start my own collection of dollies and a hand shrinking 'pliers'
Image
Image

Barry, as you can see.... your hammer has inspired me(not sure if it is visible in the photo)

Cheers!
