It sounded like a Beetle in the movie. But then again,it must've been 'fixed' in a studio.

I read an interesting fact tonight. The KG was never intended to be a VW.

It was a body style designed for Studebaker that got canned and later taken over by VW and adopted to fit the VW pan.

If you look at that second pic,it almost looks like a studebaker nose.
The Karmann Ghia debuted at the October 1953 Paris Auto Show as a styling concept created for Ghia by Luigi Segre

Luigi Segre

Luigi ?Gigi? Segre was an Italian automotive designer and engineer, leading the Carrozzeria Ghia from 1953, when Mario Boano left, until his death....
.

In the early 1950s, Volkswagen was producing small, fuel efficient, reliable automobiles (like the Type 1). As the world recovered from World War II.

World War II

World War II, or the Second World War , was a global military conflict which involved a Participants in World War II, including all of the great powers, organised into two opposing military alliances: the Allies of World War II and the Axis powers....
, consumers began to demand more stylish and elegant vehicles. Executives at Volkswagen decided to produce an "image" car for post-war buyers. The Karmann Ghia, VW's venture into the sports car market, was created in 1956. While it had limited power for a sports car, its stylish looks and reasonable price made sales strong.

Volkswagen contracted with German coachbuilder Karmann to build this car. Karmann in turn contracted the Italian firm Ghia for a sports car design. Ghia took an existing, but unused, design (originally intended for Chrysler) and modified it to fit a slightly modified Beetle floorpan.

Floorpan

The floorpan is a large sheet metal Stamping that often incorporates several smaller Welding stampings to form the floor of a large vehicle and the position of its external and structural panels.... which had been widened some .
