Mags - advice and suggestions wanted

Post by Tony Z »

OK guys... need input here. Maybe some of you photoshop gurus can come up with some ideas....

I am seriously thinking of changing my mags to 17" from my current 15" VX1's.
I am limited to two PCDs... can either go for 4x100 or 5x100. So unfortunately that rules out the mazda6 rims which will look super sexy.

Any ideas or suggestions???
I have been online a few times and have done some window shopping while in SA, but cant find anything that I like.

The other option that I am considering now is to leave my VX1's on the car. Its a look I have always liked and still like. My problem is getting good rubber for the rear. The fronts are 195/50/15 (citi golf size so plenty tyres available), but the rears are 195/60/15. I might take the rears up to 225/50/15 if I can get good rubber in that size.

Anyone able to throw out some ideas or suggestions?

2 pics I have of the car from my last time at home....

You get those 17" replica BBS wheels which would look very wicked on your car. 4x100 pcd. I'm surprised that you are having difficulty finding 195/60/15. They are fitted as standard to a lot of Toyota Corollas and older Merc C classes, Dunlop makes it, and the price is not too bad. But please do something about those rear lights :?

Have you got pics? BBS makes a lot of different wheels.
I am not prepared to use Dunlops again. Had bad experiences with them and Dunlop claims I was driving for extended distances with my tires flat.
BTW, I am not looking for cheap tires, I am looking for good tires. If it came standard on a Corolla, then its prob not what I am looking for

Continental makes them too, that's what the older C class had. I'll find some pictures and post them. Basically a replica of the LM.

I run the 185 continentals and they nice tires, and seem to offer a lot more grip than the coopers. Dunlop's i haven't actually had problems with so far, and that is the 205 sized SP sport tire.

One thing about the continentals, the guys have been complaining the walls are too thin and dont stand up to too much abuse from road works :wtf:

Thats my limited tire knowledge dispensed to the masses.
From fastest to slowest:

Birkin race car, not much is standard
Lotus Elise 111R, almost everything is standard
'75 SP 1600 with a few mods
B8 A4 Avant tdi, towing made easy

We have Contis on our Toyota and they are very good tyres.

This is the replica BBS wheel that I'm talking about. The guy photoshopped the centres black in the picture.

These wheels can be had for around R5k for a set of 4.

What a laugh... went onto the TWT (tiger wheel and tyre) website, found a set of tires that I have been scoping out for ages.
I write them a letter asking about sizes. Here is the reply I get
Hi Tony

Thank you for your enquiry, unfortunately there is no stock of this tyre country wide. We do sell this tyre but Yokohama only bring it in on special order as they are very expensive and hard to come by. It would probably be easier to get it in Europe or directly from Japan maybe?

Those rims do look good... but they are a little too chrome for my liking.... and have you ever tried to clean those properly?? Doubt that is any fun.

I am starting to think of something on the lines of the following

Bugspray... lets just say there are not that many Cup 1 or Cup 3 rims for sale online in SA.

Tony E - thanks for the pics. The Chrome isnt me at all. The 17s are not my style. While being nice, they leave a little too much room open, which needs to be filled by a big disc (14" at least). Well, thats my taste. You better be at the George Show!!

Keep the ideas coming. The more minds, the better.

Cup wheels all the way, they are available in 17", and are still VW related... for anoraks who care.

IMHO, they also work well on cars with a more modern paint colour, so should be great on your bug.

Cool pic Chris
