Where is the cheapest place to purchase bearings etc.
What are the best makes?

Try Alert Engine Parts
I got all my engine parts here in Cape Town mainly from Masterparts and Alert
Main,Conrod and Cam bearings Mahle brand you also get ACL rod bearings as well as AE brand and Kolbenschmidt brand in the main and con rod and cam bearings I think the Kolbenschmidt are the best but more expensive I have only used the Mahle and ACL bearings they seem fine

Piston Rings I've got grant ones I've used them before they seem to last well Masterparts sell them bought a set a few months ago R146 inc Vat

From fastest to slowest:

Birkin race car, not much is standard
Lotus Elise 111R, almost everything is standard
'75 SP 1600 with a few mods

Its alert engine spares/parts, so dont look for masterparts :lol:

their prices are decent and stock just about everything...they helped me with bearings when even volkspares was out...
From fastest to slowest:

Birkin race car, not much is standard
Lotus Elise 111R, almost everything is standard
'75 SP 1600 with a few mods
B8 A4 Avant tdi, towing made easy

What truth is there is this statement:

standard 1600 beetle piston rings are the same size as standard 1400 nissan bakkie rings.
