Hello...!
I'm Camper Dave and I own a 1975 Fleetline Splitscreen Panel.
I'm looking to find as much about the history of my van as I can as underneath the paintwork (as I bought it) seems to be some sort of sign writing - Id love to find out what it was.

I bought my van some 4 years ago in a tatty state. I havent done much to the exterior as I like the weathered look. I have changed the inside though as when I bought it there was nothing in the back - now theres a custom camping interior.

The registration number when it was in SA was LBS119GP, anybody know of this van?

Any information would be welcomed.

Why not get in touch with the JMPD about the history of the kombie, I mean it is a GP plate. They are very helpfull when it comes to matters such as these. They will give you a full run-down of the vehicle, all the tickets it has had in the past, and the annual milage as one has to submit such info at the beginning of each disc year.

Ask the person who deregistered the car locally to get you the info. They won't give you info if you have to email them...

Hi all
I am based in Cape Town
I recently bought a bug , 1978 1600
the body is bad , the motor is going , but she is still a head turner
this is my second beetle , my first was a 1964 , my dad bought it for 500 rand in 1993 or 94 and it was my first car , he bought it with a burnt engine and 1100 and 6 volt , he owned a motor mechanic workshop and I used to help out holidays and weekends , now I bought a bug for 3000 rand and love it , and my kids
I am starting on it tomorrow , doing the front suspension then dropping the motor , then taking it to my uncle for the body while we do the motor . I am seriously thinking of fitting a turbo to it , but keep it 1600 , any turbo bugs out there?
would love to hear any comments , tips , advice

Hi All,

I'm Mike, and I've got a '62 Type 2 bus down in Cape Town. I bought her in Joburg a few months ago unseen when I was working abroad (had a friend check her out for me tho') and then flew in to Jhb and drove her down to CT. Hell of a trip! Took our time and camped out and braai'd every night, lost all brakes halfway, nursed it slooooowly through the Karoo, even got engaged somewhere along the way and generally had an awesome time. And all of this with no interior. I mean NONE. Didn't even have front seats. Anyway, the old girl made it down here and now she's getting some much needed TLC. So far serviced the brakes, replaced some dodgy wheel bearings, did a lot of re-wiring, sanded and repainted the interior, fitted some sound proofing and laid a plywood floor. Now need to find some seats. And that leaky 1600SP needs some attention too.

If anyone knows where I can get some suitable seats (don't have to be original - as long as they fit I'll be happy for now) and a rear bumper I'd love to hear from you. Also want to fit a full flow oil filter... and and and...!!!

Hello from Finland!
I lived 11 good years in Kenya but never got chance to visit SA myself. Maybe one day, who knows.
I have been looking VW related sites all over the world and this of yours looks great! I have listened aircooled sound of VW since 1963, but 1985 I found quite original type 1 1952 model and did a quick repair to get it back to streets. Last year I desiced to build it as original as possible without separating body and pan.
