Aftermarket Carb?

Morning guys

I would like to do some minor mods to my bush buggy, 1600 twin port. Im planing on exhaust, electronic ig. and a carb. I have the std solex at the moment and have been told that a twin carb kit and exhaust will give me some extra voooma! Im not that keen on fafing with two carbs out here in the dirt but can one of you tell me if there is a single carb option that will give me some extra vavavoom. Will it bolt straight on and what should i expect to pay?

Any of you have something 2nd hand that you are looking to sell?

I have mounted a 36 dcd 7 carb on a beetle before, you will need an adaptor for it though.
I found that the engine ran smoother than usual and was more responsive.

I have been told that a 40 downdraft is the business, any ideas? Where would you get the adapter from?

get the exhaust and then see if you still want to change the carb later.

A 36DCD needs a full new manifold. The adaptor just takes the two throats and restricts them back down to the size of the original manifold - you might as well just leave the stock carb in place.

A single IDF setup if difficult to find in SA. Now to mention trying to find a single 40IDF sitting somewhere.

the exhaust alone will make a decent difference that you will be able to feel

Dave Rowley does the single carb conversion using a Dellorto 36 carb I think He sells it as a kit with new SS manifold, air filter etc

Edmond, have you ever used that one?

Unless he has changed the seals he supplies with it, finding seals that actually seal for that one is a little bit of an issue - trust me, I know.

how well will a 38 weber (ford v6) and scat manifold work on a 1600 tp

Does that carb fit the manifold properly?
I have heard a few people in SA talking about running that carb on a bug, but I dont think I have ever come across someone that has. Different manifold to the DCD I think.

your question.... if you have a decent 4-1 exhaust, then I dont think it will hurt much if tuned right. Might be worth around 10hp but dont quote me.

After changing my ignition and exhaust and keeping the rest pretty much stock, I changed my heads to a set that I did a small port job and valve job on, I also cut the heads for a CR of 8.1:1 from stock 7.4:1 and then added twin 36IDFs. The new heads and carbs got me from around 50hp up to 74hp just because the engine could then breath properly.
those exact same heads and carbs hit the 95hp mark in a 1600 after a cam change.


When changing your carb if you are looking for more power, you need to make sure the whole "breathing" system is more open and can allow more air through. Putting a huge carb on a tiny manifold by using an adapter wont give you results simply because you turn your big carb back into a small pipe. ---- thats the same reason a single port wont perform as well as a twin port (when you have done the same amount of work to each engine).

thats the DCD manifold if I see correctly.
Have a look inside, those manifolds often have crap hanging all over the place getting in the way. Not down from the carb, but look from the ends of the pipes.
If they are bad, you can bring them around to my place in Jan and I'll see if my tools will reach far enough in to remove some of the crap

this carb and manifold was electro.......something something cleaned and sandblasted by dave r. all bits was removed and replaced with a new gasket set and filter. ill double check before i fit it. i need to fit it and take it to jessie huggert for jets and dyno. then hopefully the engine bay is complete
