So....huge opportunity in my view - US import!

Post by Dutch_Diver »

Surfing the net I came across this!

I think it's a bargain even with having to spend approx R20k to ship from USA to SA!!!!

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/ ... ?id=853487

Brand new all for R140k.....all this for less than I paid for a Golf 1.6 2 years ago!!!!!

Very sweet but I thought you had more chance of finding a gov official that wasn't incompetent and corrupt than importing a car here?

IF you do it legally, you can only import NEW cars, as in , BRAND new, and you will pay at least 44% taxes and duties before all is said and done.... and you wonder why our 2nd hand cars are so expensive compared to the States and Europe....

What I don't understand then is the shipping company I have been talking to re shipping Ro-Ro ferries, has refused to take my cars. The reason I have been given is that there is a huge import market of secondhand vehicles from UK to SA, the boat then sails empty to Japan, where it's loaded with Japanese vehicles destined for the UK were there's a huge demand for them.

Makes no sense to me any of this.... I tell you exporting from SA is not easy or cheap! Been quoted up to R97k for one 40' container for Mo & Bobbie......I might well be selling them both at this rate!!!! :(

Huh? What am I missing. We are not allowed to import ANY 2nd hand vehicles, unless specifically approved (like special vehicles for handicapped people etc), are they a) all going to SOUTHERN african countries, like Namiba, Angola, Zim, Botswana? or b) Are things more corrupt than I thought and illegal importing is rife unbeknownst to the man on the street?

Stumbled upon an interesting piece of information.

If you want to import a VINTAGE car, older than 40 years according to the legislation, then you can request special permission from the MEC, and if granted, you are allowed to legally import the vehicle, but NEVER allowed to sell it in our country...

Spotted many UK reg car driving around my area. There's a little loop hole re returning South Africans and i think the import of second hand car problem is mostly caused by left hookers and non-homologated vehicles. If you bring in say a bug or a jeep 4.0 cherokee that was sold here then you can get it in (as far as my talks and understanding from importer is)
Camping is cheaper than therapy.

"Wanna sell it" "Yeah, but there's a national shortage on 'for sale' signs."

There's a company called LA Streets (lastreets.com ?) that I saw a while back advertising that they import muscle cars from the US. Might be worth talking to?
Also, if we aren't allowed to import anything, where do things like the Ariel Atoms etc come from?

New imports (Ariel Atom), no problem Barry, pay your taxes and all ok.
Vintage cars (older than 40 years as per the laws) all ok with the right papers. (LA Streets probably makes use of this route).
But that is the LEGAL way. Illegal ways, only your conscience and the depth of your pockets is the limit apparently...
