Let's give them a proper South African welcome

Post by fig »

Hey Volks

Watchers of thesamba forums may have seen this thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewto ... order=asc&

This guy is busy preparing his baywindow bus for a trip from Amsterdam to South Africa for the World Cup later this year. I wrote to him and suggested meeting him when he's in SA. Ideally I'd like to arrange some kind of local bus welcoming committee and possible convoy as they enter Joburg. Since they'll be touring the whole country (watching the Dutch team play in Jhb, Durban and Cape Town), there's scope for local ACVW volks to welcome them at any number of places. He's also hoping to do Sani Pass.

Anybody have any suggestions or want to participate in something?

It would be cool to meet up somwhere in SA, however it's a bit hard to plan something since we're with a whole group of people and we can't just go about and do our own thing. However, we'll be in Johannesburg by June 14th, Durban by June 19th and Cape Town by June 24th. I think it would be really awesome if the local kombi club could join us for a day.

I'm not quite sure at which date we'll cross into SA, but the dates above are the dates the Dutch soccer matches are played, so those are pinned.

I'll keep you posted and we'll stay in touch.

Cheers,

Lucas

What an awesome idea!!

I'm sure it will make the news as well. :hangloose:

I will gladly assist where possible. Don't think my Fleetline will be completed by then.

Am involved with transport for the world cup and know from the Confed cup what choas its going to be near the stadiums, and considering the traffic cops' lack of brains best advise is to stay away from stadiums with anything resembling a kombi.

June 14 is a Monday, maybe we could meet up with them over the weekend before they get into JHB and all drive in together??

Good advice vfront. The closest I plan on getting to any world cup stadium is my house in Jhb!

Here are some pics of Lucas's bus from his trip to the Beijing Olympics two years ago:

I "heard" about that as well! :P As I recall, I said I can't make a firm commitment to Richtersveld yet, but am keen to go. Even if a whole lot of us are on the Richtersveld tour, there will be plenty of ACVW volks around to welcome Lucas. I'm still keen on Richtersveld, but there's a few other things that have to come together before I can commit.

I've sent the link off to my wife that works for the FIFA LOC here in PE.

If the Dutch qualify in the 3rd round (not sure if that is correct),they will play in PE as well.Lucas is more than welcome to stay over here by me in PE on his way from Durban to Cape Town or if the Dutch play in PE.

Does this mean you have joined the ranks of our President with wives working in various spheres of the community? "My wife that works for..."

Am on board - maybe get their route plan and we can link up to form a nice cruise into JHB. Maybe hit a nice coffee shop or roadhouse on way in.

Can even go so far to organise a camp out the weekend before that links with their route
Camping is cheaper than therapy.
