Also for general information -- some of the parts that Dutch is referring to actually DO NOT exist on a beetle, but we all know what Dutch is on about Bobby is looking very beautiful though

Last question, but the most serious, what is the absolute last day the she has to be ready for the container?

Very good question......follow the list below and work backwards....

1) Load onto container
2) Take car & bus to Cape Town ship yard on trailer with 1/4 fuel
3) Agree shipping company & loading date
4) Gain Import permit in the UK
5) Gain export permit
6) Gain Police Clearance
7) Take car to police station for inspection
Finish Car

So working backwards.....Date I leave is 14th Feb so all of the above have to be done before that......so I think Bobbie has to be ready in 2 weeks to make it all......finger crossed everyone

I'm with you......I'm trying to get time out of the office but that's proving hard as my replacement doesn't arrive until 18th Jan and the other boss had a death in the family this morning so he's heading back to the UK.

Update for Saturday..... Popped in this morning to check progress. Sorry I missed you Esme but Father-in-Law wanted to go to the Francshoek Car Museum. Anyway back to Bobbie.

Progress on the Front!

Front bumper has been fitted......



All the parts have been refurbished and it looks great. I need to get the new number plates made as the one on Bobbie are the original ones from Northern Cape where she came from! The spots look great too.... So just fit the headlights and indicators and some wiring and we are getting there on that end externally.

On the back, The gearbox was in on Wednesday but now all the brakes are done, new pipes and handbrake cables as we have changed the rear drive shafts to be the longer ones therefore the originals no longer fit. New shocks and all looking good. The starter has been rebuilt and should be in soon. The rear wheel arches have been stone chip painted so looking great.



The rear bonnet has been fitted as have the rear wheels. So now we can get her on the ground and fit the engine, running boards, bumpers, etc and start the wiring....Fuel tank still needed as well as all the interior. Making great progress and I have to collect some parts from Dave Rowley on Monday to progress with fitting the engine so let's hope it's in on Monday or Tuesday. Then we can start to fit all the other items.

The spots are amazing and original! They were ordered and fitted when the car was collected from the Dealer in NC....

Hey DD, in light of this thread http://www.aircooledvwsa.co.za/viewtopi ... 34&t=15153, can you give us a 'ball park figure' of a resto of this kind if you don't mind? I mean your bug will leave the workshop in factory (if not better) condition. Mate has been asking about spending R x on a new entry level car for his budget vs restoring an old car to almost the same value (or best value for money. NOT talking CHEAP though!!).

If I could hazard a guess at costs, taking certain accessories into account, this project should come in around R75K including the purchase price. That about right Dutch ? If it is a bit of a personal question, just ignore this post

Look if you do work yourself than you can save money but I don't have the time, skill or tools to do this to the level that Bobbie will be done too. People will say I'm crazy and that the car isn't worth it, etc.....etc.....etc but as many have said I don't care, "It's my money and my choice". But I tell you Mo was much more money but look at the result...no one else has one exactly the same.



The car was a 1 owner from new and I took 6 months to find in Northern Cape so knew that she would be solid as could be. Didn't realise that sand could do damage though. Anyway, I paid R14k for the car.

I plan that restoration including new parts where needed, even where not necessarily needed (i.e. I have done all shocks, brakes, cylinders and bearing for example) will end up adding around R60k.

So for the price of a new citi golf (if you can still get one) I'm getting a slower, no equipment car (i.e. no AirCon, Electric Window, Radio, etc) but I don't care. Bobbie will be my daily driver and I know that I will never make my money back but that's not the point. I'm doing because I love classic cars and I want something that I won't worry about taking my kids and wife in! I want something different that no one else has!!!!!

So Total around R80k including cost of initial vehicle. KK you are about spot on and you also know....I love your %*!

Now as for the accessories.......I shouldn't mentione but I have purchase some very rare items......that are priceless in my view. For those that know, I have an original map light, Hazet tool box, VW bullet emblem, luggage set, spare fuel 9l tank, vase, etc, etc........My suggestion is save and don't try to get everything just because!!!!!

One thing I look back on is if I should have started this journey with an oval but actually I'm happier with Bobbie as she will be a daily driver and an Oval is more likely to be stolen and the parts are 3 times more difficult to source.....

For the level of work you are getting, although a lot of money, I think it is a bargain.

As you rightly say, buy a new Citi golf/Atoz/Aveo, OR, a beetle like BOBBIE. There is no comparison for me.
Cannot wait to see the final product!
