What broke on your ACVW today...

Post by JamesD »

Good bye head light relay! was 2 days ago but i still haven't managed to find one yet. Saw my brights were on so i flicked the stalk but nothing happened so i turned the car off while going down a down hill and back on,then the relay went berserk, was pulling in and out faster than a teenage in the bathroom with a naughty magazine. But the lights were still on. Got home, turned off car, turned on ignition and it was dead. so there is either a short or it is the relay, didn't pop a fuse so i rate it is the relay.

SO what broke on your pride and Joy today/recently?

Ps, not really an advice thread, more a Rant thread ( :rantswitch: ) because something broke and is annoying

Not today but 2 weeks ago.

Due to travelling down farm roads between Bredasdorp, Witsand and Riverdale my Earth lead came of the battery twice.

Now I have to enjure the comments of our club newsletter where every body has to read about my "breakdowns"

The cable is 5mm to short for dirt roads.

After half a million kilometres of driving ACVWs I had only ever had one generator fail on me. Then last year was the year for gennies to go south: I had four generator failures: two on the Dormobile (not counting the dud used replacement I bought first), and two on Skilpad.

I replaced Skilpad's genny this weekend (early bay long style, very hard to find), and I'm in the process of upgrading the Dormo to an alternator (just for you Pine :hangloose: )

Now I just have to track down the short in Skilpad's high beam circuit! It's either the towbar wiring, the relay or the switch. For now I've just pulled the fuse until I can spend some qual;ity time on the wiring.

My points and/or condenser died 2 weeks back, while I was at work. So I first had to run the car on the starter motor to get it to the underground parking, and I have then had to take the occasional half hour off work to try fix my car in the basement! Just narrowed the issue down to points and conderser today (ever tried checking for spark with no assistant!?) Will Have to make a trip to volkspares to pick up some parts soon..

Brakes.

Today was a rather typical hot Durban day and I noticed the pedal was getting harder and harder until eventually there was no travel and the car was practically stopping. Managed to get it home and up on the blocks. The drivers drum has a slight dragging feeling, so backed off the adjuster and there was movement, albeit it not exactly smooth.

Need to work out how the hell you take the cap off to get to the pads. The passenger side is obvious, the drivers is a solid cap, any tips?

Um, Been there, had that. You need more play on your pedal. Means a bit of adjustment down in your foot well. mine seized up 6 years ago shortly after i rebuilt the car, bit of adjustment to increase the play and never had the problem again  My wheels were so hot from the friction that i could hardly touch them when i did find a spot to pull over and figure out what was wrong.

Kickdown switch for the automatic transmission... Fortunately I had a spare so the Square was back on the road in no time.
