Dont I feel like a yutz now for removing the bags which I thought some previous owner shoved into the rear panels...

Yes, those bags are factory sound deadening. They also trap moisture and cause beetles to rust out around the rear window.

From fastest to slowest:

Birkin race car, not much is standard
Lotus Elise 111R, almost everything is standard
'75 SP 1600 with a few mods

Yes, VW didnt realy think that one out properly. That foam they stuffed in there is the cause of many a cancer on Beetles. :(

Makes me feel so much better.... the reason I pulled them out was because I thought it would make the car rot.... guess I was right. The car is a bit louder now (but I suspect that has to do with the new engine)

I thought it was cause you started cleaning the ear wax out more often....
