Post by josh »

My 79 bay has still got the original motor which was just serviced by this kick ass mech who got her from not idling to running so smooth sometimes can't tell if she's stalled only thing he couldn't sort are one or two small oil leaks which land on the exhaust and start smoking after about 25km from the heat any suggestions besides the obvious also thinking of swopping 2l engine for a 1600 need some advice only got my bay b 2 weeks ago so pretty much a vw virgin

Hi Josh

Have you checked the oil sender unit? Usually the first cuplrit for minor oil leaks on a Type 4 engine. (Should be right next to the oil cooler, mounted vertically underneat the engine tin. Quite a bitch to reach...)

Hi Josh
Also look at the push rod tubes where they go into the heads. Some drips here might land on the heat exchangers - that big metal boxes running underneath on both sides of the engine. Thay only get really hot after a few k's. The exhaust runs inside them and they supply heat to the cabin. Mine is disconnected although the exchangers are still on. Would like to hear opnions on maybe removing/cutting them of. On the Samba they said it is not good to remove as they help in the air flow?

Also check the oil cooler underneath in front of the exhaust the square thing with the fins - looks like a radiator. It sometimes leak where it attaches to the engine block. I am not sure if a drip here might end up on the exhaust.

If your pancake is running fine you will be disappointed with the 1600 power in a bay. Although locally to find people to work on the pancake is difficult especially if your heads need work - it is damn near impossible to get good heads. Who is your mechanic? Maybe I can use him as well.

..... Or the pushrod tube seals.....
if its the sender unit you'll most propably see the oil dripping down over the oil filter....

pushrod tube seals they will be dripping off the lil bumps on the valve cover side where the outer end of the pushrod tubes go in.....

.... or if it is on the right hand side... check the little rubber boot for the dipstick for tears... it can be replaced with some rubber tubing if needed....

PS you can change the pushrod tube seals yourself quite easily and you only need to remove the valve covers, rocker gear, and the pushrods themselves...

The J plates under the motor are bolted to the heater boxes at a couple of points, they direct the hot air out of the engine to the rear of your bus. I would not run your heater boxes disconnected, the flow of air over them helps keep the temp in the heater boxes down, if they are disconnected the heat builds up to more than what it should and in turn the hot air rising onto the heads causes the heads to run hotter too. The heater boxes can be removed, I would think it's a better option now, if they are disconnected at the moment, that way there is no excessive heat build up in that area. To remove the heater boxes you will need to remove the exhaust.
