Hi There,
I have a '67 Squareback in daily use. The 1600 engine is a bit tired. I have a fresh 1800 Kombi engine. Would this fit the type 3 Variant? Has anybody done a conversion like this? If so how difficult would it be?
Cheers, Malcolm

Hi Malcolm, and welcome to ACVWSA. The 1800 Kombi engine, if Type 4, will be a straight fit, and you'll have the following advantages:Malcolm wrote:Hi There,

- Obviously more power, 1800 compared to 1600
- It will have an oil filter, which the 1600 doesn't have
On the downside (and don't let this put you down, though)
- The 1800 will be more expensive to service/overhaul
- The Kombi carb manifolds might be too high for your engine lid to close
- If you don't have an exhaust, it might be a bit pricey to get a new one/have one made up
Nonetheless, I'd say GO AHEAD, DO IT!

Speak to IMPI, though.. he makes an adapter to fit your Type 4 (1800) engine to the Variant's rubber fresh air intake duct.
PS... Don't forget the pics

Beware the rear engine mount AFAIK the 1800cc Kombi engine does not have it. Don't drive without that rear engine mount unless you have an engine hanger bar which the '67s don't have.

Thanks guys!
Sounds like a viable proposition. I'll now have to "hijack" the car from my son to start working on the engine swap.
Still trying to figure out how to upload pictures! I'm pre-computor technology era!
I restored this car 4 years ago and it has been in daily use by my son in Cape Town ever since.
