Why do sidedraught carbs have a reputation for pushing out more power?

What's the advantage?

As far as I understand it, the only difference is the intake is horizonatal instead of vertical?

Because the intake charge doesn't have to make any changes in direction before reaching the inlet ports.

This is assuming they're fitted to an inline or V engine. To have the same effect with a horizontally opposed engine you'd want downdraughts.

....And by the way Merlin.. one of the best places to get those nice carbs from is on a flat four alfa......

i have a vw mag where a dude fitted 2 sidedraughts to his motor. but then again, he had to, because he needed to make space for 2 turbochargers. oh, dont forget the enlarged cylinders heads, 8 valves a side

The Weber sidedraughts come up for sale fairly often, but from my understanding of Fig's reply, they're not really beneficial on an ACVW engine?

I've heard of guys using the Alfa carbs before...but why taint your 'dub with Italian rubbish like that? :mrgreen:

Eben's referring to the Weber downdraughts from an Alfa flat four, Alfasuds and Alfa Exports had them. The Weber is a much better carb than the Solexes that are stock on all ACVWs.

Oh, and re your "Italian rubbish", Merlin, early Porsche 911s had purpose designed Solex carbs, one for each cylinder. These carbs had such a bad flat spot between 2,500-3,000rpm that all early 911s prepared for racing used a pair of off-the-shelf triple-choke Webers, and from February 1966 the Webers were fitted as stock on all 911s.

Dont forget the Dell DLRA's as I have... they flow one size better per size than webers......
