a little rant about insurance and general attitude

Post by dsan »

Excuse the rant, finally lost it. Had an assessor come out this morning to value the '59. He rocks up in his new car, clipboard and pen and starts walking around. I get the usual comments "it's got no alarm" "hmmm non-standard bumpers on" "oh steering wheel is a bit worn".

He then pipes up the classic line, so often heard in SA, "aaag, look it's an old car so the value isn't there, i'd say right now it's about 15k-20k value, i mean you can get beetles for 2 or 3 grand in the paper".

I really hate how this country has been so brainwashed by the new car makers to think that anything old is worthless. Sure, go and spend 100k on something shite like a chevy or something, but an older car, noooo throw that away, what would the neighbours think??

Getting a classic car insured is hard work!

rant over, sorry

I'm very fortunate with this. Always had an excellent insurance company but the catch is that you cannot just insure a car or two. They want a package like two cars and household contents and a few out-of-house items like a laptop or camera or such. My whole family is with them and has been for years. All they asked me to do was to get a written valuation from a Beetle dealer (haha) and submit and they would insure the car accordingly. Beetle Beauties gave a valuation of R40k on mine with no hesitation. For fully comprehensive insurance I pay R120 a month.

It's not getting the insurance that's the issue, it's the evaluation process. The catch phrase often used is "contact VW", which is about as useful as calling up the police and asking them for their advice on corruption.

Oh, I'm sure the cops can give you LOTS of good advice on corruption. The question is whether they'd be prepared to share their trade secrets with you. :P
