67 Splitty Panel Van-front suspension parts fitted

Post by Tiger0107 »

Hi all..

Finally got some pics of my splitty. Got her about 2 to 3 weeks ago. Joined the aircooledvwsa forum about a month or so ago. EVeryone seems to be very friendly and helpfull here. Thanks....

She is a 1967 VW Split windscreen panel van. She is in a pretty decent condition considering she is about 43 years old. She is pretty much complete just missing the mirrors and and one wiper.

Planning or restoring her, but not 100% sure to what as yet. Original or....

When I got her she was not running. This past weekend I did a service on it. And had to change the boggy wires (completely cracked and damanged) and for some reason the screw that holds that points in place was missing. Managed to get one.
I finally managed to start it. :drunks: :drunks: :drunks:
But she does not sound too healthy. When she swings to start it sounds like she is dragging to start and then after a bit starts. Other times she starts one time. Also drove her for about 500m to a km and she didnt move that well. like no pulling power. Not sure if that could be cause of the points gaping or timing. Or maybe something wrong with the motor. Any1 knows maybe wat it could be?? :zhelp:

Other thing is that when i drove it, the steering of the van did not seem right. not sure if it could be the suspension or steering rack or jus the tyres and wheel alignment. When drive it, and turn slightly it likes she wants to turn too much and then when i turn in the opposite direction it also like goes way out. Any idea what could the problem be?? :zhelp:

Also brakes was not working.. completely down, but that was jus cause there was no brake fluid. Filled some brake fluid and managed to get it up, still need to bleed it properly.

Body wise I think i need to replace the nose, the passenger side looks like it was panel beated on the inside. Other wise that is one major rust patch on the left back panel. And then very minimal rust everywhere else. Or that was I can see.. Under carriage seems to be ok, need to check properly.

This is some pics of her. Ler me know what use think.

This is the panel beating on the inside of the nose...  :( :(

Image

Inside still pretty much complete.. Jus the light on the gauges not working..

Image

This is the engine. I think it still has the original engine. It a 1500 motor. With SFH0 engine code.
Engine was complete jus missing a battery and the heater pipes. :D

Well most of the work I am doing myself for now. On weekends and spare time..
Thanks.. Any feedback is welcome, positive and negative.

Very nice bus you got there! It's in remarkable condition for it's age. Sounds like there's not too much to have to do to get it on the road either so keep up the good work!! :hangloose:

Nice bus! Like others have said mechanics first. Check the play on the engine crank, that might be your problem worn. On steering, sounds like the ball joints to me, really worn and therefore play when you turn. Pray it's not the steering box. If you need a good mechanic in Jbg, just ask the forum as that's really important in my view even if just to get them to check it out so that you get a full list of jobs you need to do! Have fun and post pics of underneath and work as you go.

To start sorting, brakes, suspension & mechanicals in that order, cosmetics last. :D

I think the proper thing to do would be for Tiger to offer Samba the bus at the paid price. Seeing as Samba WAS actually the first person onto this sale.

But then again Samba already has a bus so , Tiger, bugger him, the greedy sod. Just cos he wanted a panel so nobody can see what he gets up to in the backof it.

Samba, just buy some decent Curtains for you Fleety.

Will he first didn't want give it to me.. He said that he was waiting for the first guy who called him to come and see it.
And one week later he didn't come and I get on calling him like every 2 days.. and had to wait for like a week later for the papers.. But it looks like it paid off..
Sorry again man...
