Anyone brought buses back?

Post by nosfera2 »

So, here I am in CT again, contemplating the move back home, work dependant.

Has anyone shipped cars from the UK back into SA? I have my 2 (73 Westie, 72 bakkie), but am not sure if it's better to sell there and buy here? Shipping, taxes, etc?

And advice on insurance? Had a quick search and read a few things. It seems the cheap comprehensive insurance I am accustomed to isn't really available here?

I suspect you are alone on this one. Go to the traffic dept and find out
or drive them down, that'll prob be easier

Go see Inspector Korbus Williams in Stellenbosch police department and he will help you. On shipping I have some contacts, cheap and take a risk to fully covered but little more expensive!

It's actually really easy as long as the vehicles are registered in the UK and you are a returning Saffa! if not a Saffa, still easy but you have to pay a retainer to SARS which is returned when the vehicles are removed. If they aren't ever taken back, SARS keep the money so like import duty.

Wow, thanks a lot for the responses guys.

@Tony, I doubt they'd make it to be fair. And I am a bit short of cash to launch another mad cap adventure. But a VERY cool idea I have contemplated many times. Surf down the coast of Africa in my camper....

@Dutch, nice one! Am in Scumerset West, so that's an easy trip for me. My setup is what you say, UK registered and returning. Will be in touch about the shipping people. Was wondering about SARS, but it sounds easy... famous last words! And yeah it'll be expensive to ship, but I have poured so much blood sweat and beers into the bloody things. Somehow I can't abandon them.

Would be great to see some importing into SA.....don't let the UK forums know

Also when you get there.....you need to hock up with Jurgen and Esme in Somerset West.....they miss a UK visitor every Saturday to take the piss out of them! :flash:  :drunks:

In a way that part of it sort of appeals to me. :) Although one can hardly say never welded. :)

Am guessing your mates are VW owners? Will look them up if I get the chance for sure. :)
