ring gear change

Post by RvanZ »

so it has been a very long time since my last post, and sadly i have had to give up on my lotus-vw project. fortunately it is still being worked on by the new owner who has already fitted different wheels and a turbo'd variant 1600 motor.

so back to now....

how does one change around the ring gear on the final drive in a std transaxle box? so that the box could be used backwards, like in the formula vee?

much appreciated

First remove the axles  Ask Andy, for that you need a gear/bearing puller and sirclip pliers.

After axles were removed you should loosen the 6 nuts on left side and remove the cover pull out the big gear with all the bearings. Loosen right side and remove plate. Put the whole lot in on right side. Remember to put left cover left and right cover right, as the left got the thing for the clutch cable. Not sure what sealer to use on those covers, not there yet.

It is advisable to give it to someone that can set up Diferentials as the back lash should be set

But you can try and do it your self

All depends on the transmission you got if it is the one with the cast clutch cable holder or not
remove the side covers
Keep the Big diff bearings on the diff housing as there are shimms under them

Then give me a call and I can give you some advice even before you remove everything
