This weekend also got me to talking with Willem for something else that I want to do for the speedster. I wanted to know if it was viable first and also hear about costing. Once I crunched the numbers I decided that it was very much do-able.

We're going to build a removeable hardtop.





I was looking at copying a cabrio top, but there was too many differences that it just wasn't worth it. Then came taking a beetle roof skin to get the curve right, which was also scrapped. Eventually Willem said that making it from scratch would be the easiest option and that way we'd also know that it would fit right. So most of the initial framing will be made from wood to start off with as I can work with it no problem. The whole top when done though, will be fibreglass. Cost estimates using mates rates and with me doing 99% of the crap work with guidance from Willem will come in at about R3000-00. That's all parts included.

Bit of a bargain I think. STay tuned as this will be a long term deal. A lot is still going to happen before I get to this stage.

I have always wondered (and it also applies to any car with a space-saver spare) - what do you do with the flat full-sized wheel you have taken off, if you are in the middle of nowhere with a fully-loaded car?

What a productive week.

Stripped the carbs again due to muck inside them again. This is really getting old.

I had to fab a engine lid and bonnet lid for the car for CITP as I want to show off the 2.0 out back. Got some old round bar and made two stays that will last until I get my shocks.

Also finally got my wipers on, all I need now is the nuts from Rui and that'll be sorted.

I was hoping to do the last of the battery relocation this weekend, but Willem is out of town, so it'll have to wait till next weekend. I literally need about 20 minutes to fab the dropped section for the battery and then it can be moved. Also hoping to have my indicator stalk as well as my new ignition wired up as well.

Currently working on finishing a few projects on the speedy, I want the luggage rack, bumper supports as well as the dash pad on before I go any further with the car. She's presentable and shows herself pretty well.

guess what I did last night................whoot whoot............cleaned f-ing carb jets again. lol.

It was funny the amount of crud that I pulled out of there. I also found that my fuel filter had a huge gash in it, so no doubt all the crap was just going straight through it and on into the carbs, hopefully this is now a thing of the past.

Just as well I looked because I found the one fuel line to be totally toast, so a quick run down to midas got me some HP lines that I put it, driving the car to work this morning was actually great........gorgeous day, no clouds and the car was running super smooth. No hicups and no shuddering.

Come the weekend I finally get to finish my battery mount up front (Willem has been out of the country) and I also have some toys arriving from the US including my licence plate light, dash grab handle and a few other little things from various ebay sellers.

On the EFI: consider a fuel pressure gauge in the back at the engine. it helps a LOT with fault finding when the engine doesn't want to get going.

Well we have an update. Went to Willem this weekend and carried on with the dash pad. Laid up all the glass and cut the round arch after it cured. The arch took a while to sort out as the type 3 gauges make the arch a bit more spread out, but it's getting there. Also laid on the first layer of mud on it to get it smooth. This'll be worked on this week and then the weekend will see me working on the eyebrow section and the method of attaching it to the dash pad.





Progress is slow, but at this stage, she's not costing me anything and as the motor is pretty much the next big thing to go in, there are a LOT of smaller jobs that have to be done that just take time.

Next job was the battery box, I dropped the box down 3cm so that I can get a spare in there and now all that remains is moving the battery back about another 3cm towards the front suspension. 2 slices down each side, bend it back and then glass it up. The spare already fits in, but I want a bit of distance between the two. I can't take it down too far otherwise I won't be able to attach an A-frame to it without having issues.





It holds a 610 with no problem, there will be two brackets on each side that will hold the battery into place. I want the final product looking clean.

After the dash pad and battery have been sorted, then it's sorting out the storage area behind the back seat which will involve glassing up some holes and adding sound deadening. The ECU will go back there as well.

Decided that it wasn't low enough, so I cut it out, extended it by 50mm and then glassed it all in again.

Still have to finish off the tub though, but it's a snug fit and it now drops about70mm lower than the floor.......also doesn't hit against anything. If it even does, then the base has been reinforced with steel plate for added protection.
Currently busy looming the wire harness and then I'll lay it out and hook up, just have to hook up some fittings and that's done as well.



I also finished most of the dash pad and trimmed it up. Has to be spot filled in a few spots, but I'm very happy with it. Next is the eyebrow and the foam fill that sucker and glass that too.

Then I can finish the back and get a tonneau cover made of the roof.

Well some boring stuff going on right now as Willem is away overseas so I can't carry on with my dash pad. But the battery has been moved to the front now, (finally) and it works great, I just need to close off the holes in the back and then I can sound deaden that back area ASAP.

Also decided to change the look on the car. I was looking at going for a stripped down carrera 2 lookalike, then I decided otherwise. Plus I'm going to change the colour. Not yet, but after all the mods have been done, then it's time to change it. Going with Aqua Marine Metallic. Porsche OE colour and damn it looks classy. I'm basically building a speedster version of this coupe.







Interior will more than likely be the same as well. I still have a lot to do before I get to paint stage and that includes figuring out how the heck I'm going to make over-riders for this thing, will more than likely have to make something from scratch and get it chromed.

Also considering not putting side trim back on the car as well as the speedster badges, I'm thinking of keeping it a bit cleaner. Agh I'll see. That is still a loooooooong way ahead and I ahve to do a visit to Armand soon.
