66 Fasty (With lots of secrets....) - SOLD

Post by karmakoma »

As some of you may know, a couple of months ago, quite unplanned, I got my hands on a 66 Fasty. Looooonnnggg Story, but suffice to say the following. Saw an ad in the autotrader and investigated. After playing a bit of Sherlock Homes, we tracked down the owner.

Took it for a test drive and it seemed pretty good, bought it there and then and drove it 80km home.

It was a scorching hot day, and we got stuck in a traffic jam for over an hour. Also take into account, the Fasty was not idling well, and the 6V battery was toast, so if it dies, no chance of starting here again

Never sweated so much in my life.

Got her home without incident, and since then have done nothing much besides remove the seat covers, to reveal relatively intact seats, change the battery, and set the timing. Car needs a good service, and perhaps some more work, but more on that later.

Some pics of what she looks like now:

and she has pop-outs! :D :

Some of you might have seen her at the Beetle 75th Celebrations.

What I found strange (and so too Variant and Blitz), was the dash

Image

and for that matter steering wheel,

Other internal trim:

arm rest and interior door handles:

all shouting Pigalle. Comparing to other Pigalle's, the parts shown definately come from that production run.

The dilemma was though, with a pigalle, EVERYTHING is that deep red colour, and this car's seats, look like they come from a 67, as the pattern is different to a 66. So where they swopped? The other interesting bit, is the fact that all Pigalle's are either black or white, certainly not grey. We checked inside the ashtray, behind all the rubbers, under the boot liners, hidden nooks and crannies, and there is NO evidence whatsoever that this car was resprayed a different colour.

So, what to do.

I sent away to Germany and ordered a birth certificate, which I received last week. Hoping that this would clear things up, guess what it states?

That this car's original colour is, wait for it: Baltic Blue!

Image

Which is impossible based on our earlier checks, and should have an interior like this:

Image

Clearly not what is going on here?

So what happened?

The M Code on the birth certificate gives us a clue, M 306/487 CKD.
Just like millions of other vw's , this one was shipped to VWSA and assembled here, so who knows what the VW plant got up to when building this car, supposedly on 11 October 1965 (vw model year used to run from Aug to Aug, so Aug 65 and later - 66 model).

Now my question is as follows:

Anyone have any idea as to what could have happened?
Any way of finding out what happened at the factory (since VWSA destroyed all their records!!)?

Has anyone found something similar with other vehicles?

and more importantly, please vote in the poll what I should do with her ?

One of the potential plans is this:

That really is a bastard of a Fasty with no clear family history, so I think it would be better if you sold it to me as Frank is now really showing his exporter tendancies.

In the open as well.......

One bit of news....there was a guy (Jim) that I met here who was thinking of importing a SA bus from Durban (couldn't get the name of the person he was dealing with) but anyway, I talked him out of it when I showed the receipts....and the risks around what he could end up with as far as quality......

Buy bus.......then start spending

£3,860 or R44,000 - Container
£250 or R2,800 - Marine insurance - Total loss only - Damge insurance was almost 5 times as much
£100 or R1,140 - UK registration
£250 or R2,850 - Transport costs to get vehicle from port to home - Not allowed to drive in UK
£2,870 or R32,700 - Get the vehicle through the UK MOT and that's starting from a good base
£500 or R5,700 - Still working on the bus, service, brakes still not right, speedo cable snapped, etc, etc

So after you buy a bus, add around £7,830 or R90,000 and just to be really clear, that's before you add the following 20% value of bus - Customs import duty & 17.5% VAT for importing.

You still can't drive as you then need the normal things like fuel, insurance, etc

So when anyone asks about exporting, the poor person who buys is the idiot, as the exporters (who I hate with a passion) , just sell the vehicle and the buyer gets stuff once the money swaps hands.....If I knew now what I do, I would have sold Mo & Bobbie in SA and not had all the hassle.

Anyway, ACVW are really cheap here, was offered an 56 oval last week for £3,850! and a predator buggy shell for £500 which I'm really thinking about both to make myself a classic buggy!

Quite perfect as it is.

But if you really have to do something to it, just fit a set of Sprintstars, easy to undo. That's all :D

That's what I think......trying to find a good honest mechanic near home is proving to be difficult. I have a good engine builder now..... Remember times are really hard here, people still being laid off and business closing so I think some people / businesses are cutting corners or charging more to people they feel they can rip off.....anyway, they have lost my custom forever, as I'm a believe that to vote with your feet, no point in complaining!

Took her for a spin Saturday, for the first time since, well since the beetle 75th

I merely charged the battery overnight on friday, and she started after a couple of cranks, soon as enough fuel reached the carbs. :hangloose:

After a km I thought to myself, WHY THE HELL did I even consider selling this car, drives like a beauty, even though I neglected it.

So off I went to Van Den Brinks, just to see what's going on there. Saw a good looking early sixties beetle drive out of their road as I was about to turn in. :hangloose:

Last time the fasty was at the petrol station, I attempted to pressurize the window washer reservoir, but just heard air leaking out. Scratched around the yard for a replacement bottle (doesn't look like the yard is getting any emptier at the moment, same amount of old cars as the last couple of pics posted). Found a potential bottle, went back to the car, and then to my  as I felt round the original bottle, found out the pipe connecting the reservoir to the jets is missing. No wonder air was leaking out!

Will sort that first before looking for a new bottle again.... This fasty might turn out to be a keeper after all. :D

'Twas MEEE! I wanted to turn around but had too much momentum due to a backseat full of terracotta wine-coolers I'd just bought in Centurion. (I really need to look at my brakes some time).

Your Fasty is AMAZING! The pictures really don't do it justice. It looked brand new! Keep it. Drive it. Enjoy it.
