Split D/C project...

Post by Tiger0107 »

HI Everyone..

Ok, so I am going to attempt fixing up one of these D/C splits..

The grey one is a 62... It is jus the shell as you can see and is badly rusted.. Has both tags, one behind the seat and in the engine bay..
Think I going to try and fix this one..

The second one is a 60's I think.. It seems like it had small tail lights.... Is is also badly rusted but has doors, front suspension and back suspension with gearbox..... This one seems to have the tag in the engine bay but no tag behind the drivers seat.. :(

:hangloose: It's flippen fantastic man, go for it, you and Callum should keep in contact, he is also restoring a similar condition Double Cab, it's also a
similar model, I think his is a '60. Both of you deserve all the help you can get from the guys here, even if it is just a case of looking out for parts for you guys. Callum's major problem right now is finding a reputable, trustworthy, reliable sand blaster. His pick-up's chassis will have to be sand blasted as a start, it will obviously have to be turned on it's side, is there no one in the Cape who can do this? Or anywhere ?
Sorry did'nt mean to hi-jack your thread! Good luck with the resto, these double cabs are very scarce in SA these days, let the guys know what you need and we can keep a look out for you :hangloose: :hangloose:

Hi Dude.. Thanx man.. I think I will need all the luck and help I can get... It appreciated..

The Grey one is currently at buggoff's place... He will be doing the body work for me..
He has been a big help. Even when I had my panel van...

But he still has a couple more cars/vans to do before he gets to mine..
Gives me time to get everything else I need...

I'm so glad you've decided to restore these buses. :drunks:

Although I started restorations with my eleven window first (It seemed the easier project at the time) it's the DC I'm looking forward to driving the most.

I'd say put the Fleetline suspension on the bus without anything on it (Grey one) and start moving forward straight away.

Just to recap.

That's five early double cabs currently being restored by four forum members. 2 x Tiger0107, 1 x Muds , 1 x Caltrigger and mine, or are there more?

Hey Chris, U should have started the D/C first.. :)
I am going to try and restore ONE, the grey one.. Don't think I can do both.. :( Will be too costly for me..
Im going to use the doors and what left of the drop gates from the blue one on the grey one.. maybe one or two other pieces..

I know that blue one with the bullet holes. The blue one will fit better in my stable with the other round tail light models. Also busy with a slow low budget 63/4 ish DC restoration.

Glad there is more of these DC around. Keep up the good work.

Check what will fit first. The 60 will take the short gearbox, the one with the split housing. It is 40mm shorter that the gearbox that fits in the Fleetline. See the thread on Gill's bus how I kakked to instal the long box in the short space!

However... The 36mm Castle nut RGBs are handy as they use the same wheel bearings, seals and backing plates as a Beetle. Easier to get parts. You can, btw, fit the 36mm RGB gears in the Fleetline RGB, both drive and driven gears and end up with a 36mm output shaft.
