Is this worth saving?

Hi all!

I hope this is the correct place for this post.

I am looking to buy this Split/Bay panel van and was hoping to get some info on these vans from the forum.
The engine is currently in a thousand pieces inside the van so I have no idea what it is or should be or was originally.
The body seems to be in good condition (besides the hideous paint job). The chassis seems to be in fair condition (some rust). There is no dash and the seats are not original.

1) Is it worth fixing this van?
2) Where can I get more info on the split/bays?
3) The guy says the car was "scrapped". I am waiting for the documentation, but should this be true, how difficult is it to register once it is roadworthy again?

Sorry these are the only pics I currently have...
Any advice or info would be great as this would be my first vw van...

Hi Hendriks, quickly go to the "introduce yourself" section/thread first, quick, quick before the old timers here start winding themselves up
And then just update your avatar so that includes the area that you live in - in that way you can be directed to workshops, garages, etc closer to your home

And yes dude, it is worth saving, not many unmolested Brasila type panel vans around anymore, that one looks pretty solid !

If is not hard to get it done if you have the De-registration paper if not you will probably have allot of problems getting it done but it is possible.

Hi Hendrik, I'm not very clued up with these busses, and hopefully Fig or one of the forum members who owns a similar bus will help you, I was looking for the thread with this info but can't find it. But anyway, what you have there is a kombi with Brasilian origins, a "hybrid" of sorts, half splittie and half bay window. Not that many were made in SA so it is pretty "rare". It should have a 1600cc motor. Of interest is the gearbox and rear suspension, no reduction boxes - yours has IRS suspension.
Solid bus - bonus. Registration certificate - major bonus, you must try get that no matter what and then take it from there. You will be able to determine if the bus is stolen or not, and if it has indeed been scrapped or not, and you will also find out if there are outstanding fines, penalties, etc.

BUGGOFF - The pics aren't great, but basically from behind the front doors the "body" is a split window body, barn doors, vents on the side (top and bottom). The back lights is bay window again. The van is slightly shorter than a "proper" bay window.
O and the back corners looks like a split bus rater than bay.

I will try to post a pic of a similar bus. It almost looks like someone cut the front off a splitty and welded a bay onto it.

They are a breed on their own and will also be quite collectable on day
It has universal joints in stead of CV`s and they have Reduction boxes
What is the price the guy wants then we could give you a indication to negotiate more or just buy it

She looks like a character - I'm not so fond of Brasil Buses with windows but that panel looks cool.

There's not much interest in the baysplit hybrids. They are rare but not desireable and probably never will be; they'll always be a curiosity. It's worth saving just because very few people will bother to save them.

Your VIN breaks down as follows:

2 = Type 2
0 = ???
6 = model year 1976
1 = panel van
0037327 = sequential production number; looks like it has an extra digit???

Save it. I kinda like them, paint it a nice colour with some extra detailing and you'll have a cool, unique Bus
