Now that I'm thinking about it, I can't use an A Frame, I don't have any additional lights... :?

CooP - How can I get hold of your number so I can talk to you about your gerous offer? The van is currently in Jet Park so it'lltake some time to get there and back...

Where can I rent / borrow a car trailer from this weekend?

The only one I can find is from Venter Sandton (A bit out of the way from where I stay and going to collect the van). If I have to I'll go get it there.

I also want to go to Rustenburg to collexct a beetle this Saterday, so I'll need a trailer all day...

There is also a trailer rental place on blueberry street (located in a petrol station) by the old Red Baron Pub, just off beyers in honeydew. We've used their trailers to get a few heavy vehicles including buses. Just check them out first (welds and ramps - those things get abused)

I'll try to phone a few more places.

BUSBFK - I haven't set a time with CooP, but will let you know asap! As this is my first van, I need all the help and ideas possible!!

I phoned Dan. They don't have car trailers at this stage...

Springer - I got hold of the guy in Blueberry street (JOHN). He's got a trailer for me. R350 for the day...
The Venter in Sandton is R300 for the day...
I guess it's worth paying the extra R50 because they so colse to where the cars are going?

Sounds reasonable, we pay +- R270 at Trailer Hire in the Brackenfell area. I agree, check it over first, I had brake dramas with the last one I hired to fetch the ambo. Also make sure it has a spare wheel ! Sounds like you may have "gathering" coming up :hangloose:

Theres a trailer place on ondekkers in delarey. u-haul. cheap with the trailers, but big on deposit.

U-Trek. I've got their car trailer booked for the weekend; bringing a bus to you remember. :wink:

Their deposit is R1,000, which is standard with all trailer hire places I know.

you could always go for the easiest option (most expensive). Hire a low bed from a towing company. They pick it up and drop it off for you.
Not cheap, but def worth every penny in time and effort. I moved mine 40km and it cost about R350
Plus you got the bus for nothing, so you have spare change already.

For future car hire reference:
- Venter Roodepoort 011 764 2114 R350/day (I think they ask R800 deposit)
- Honeydew Trailers - Johan 011 794 1068 R370/day. Deposit R500
- Venter Sandton - Piet 011 444 0282 R300/day. Deposit R1000
- Shell garage in Blueberry street, Honeydew (Don't know the name of the place) R350/day Deposit R500. Speak to John
- U-Trek in Ondekkers, Delary 011 472 1116 R??? Deposit R1000 (According to fig)

Maybe there is another place on the forum where this information could be placed to assist others in future?


Tony Z - I think collecting a van/bug with a trailer adds to the adventure of my project. Might not be the quickest way to do it but I like the idea of driving down the highway with an old van on a trailer...
As I also mentioned on an earlier post, I'm goint to collect my old beelte on a farm near rustenburg on saterday after collecting the van. Don't think renting a flatbed will be such an affordable option for that distance. :?:

Some advice please, Once I collect the van, Do I post pictures in here or in the My Ride or Projects section of the forum??

Good idea! How about posting this info in the Suppliers forum.

Maybe they don't like my face, but Venter Roodepoort charges me R1000 deposit. They are usually my first choice as their trailers are generally well maintained. U-Trek in Ontdekkers charges R270 for a 4.2m car trailer and, IIRC, R320 (or was it R370?) for a 5.2m trailer.

Whatever you do, don't use any branch of Nationwide Trailer rental. They don't maintain their trailers (most of their yards hold more scrap trailers than running ones). The last one I hired from them had a bent axle and started fishtailing at 80km/h; very scary! I had already promised myself the previous time not to use them again, but then needed a trailer urgently and they were the only ones who had one available when I needed it; I'd have been better off waiting. Previously I've had to deal with no brakes, no jockey wheel, no hand brake, etc, on their trailers.

fig - Are Nationwide the orange trailer guys?

Venter Roodepoort - I can't comment on what your face looks like but as long as nothing happends to the trailer while you using it you get your money back - R800 or R1000

Also, I am not sure how long the trailer is I'm getting, just that it is a double axel.

That's U-Trek. Nationwide (or is it National???) trailers are a turquoise/green colour.

You can also try a piggy-back trailer, but then you will need lights at the rear.
I towed the bus from Hermanus to Cape town, over Sir Lowry's pass no problems
