Quick Hijack:
Why were some 356 replicar's made with flared wheel arches, is it just plainly for the looks ?

The one is the classic shape and the one with the flared arches is called the Sebring.
The 356's that were used for racing in the old days had the flared arches.

They were mainly made with the flared arches for easier access to the wheels, especially in the back and it gave it a more aggressive look.

I'm going to be making alli frames that will be used with the hard top that will have sliding glass, kinda like a pre 67 type 2 bus.

Re: 2.0 KCC 356 Porsche Speedster
Are the windows going to be attached to the roof or the door?
I kinda like this idea but with the roof on, on a sunny day you cant open it.

The door. The speedsters have two slots where the windows clip in and then it's clipped with a leather strap onto the door panel.Splitz wrote:Are the windows going to be attached to the roof or the door?

The picture that you posted is of the soft top windows, they pull out and fit under the rear cover when not in use. I also don't like the idea of not being able to open the windows when the roof is on, hence me going this route.
In fairness of it all, the hard top will be fitted only if it is MOER cold or raining like a mofo for weeks on end. I've driven with my soft top up and the porta side windows and it keeps the rain out just fine.

Re: 2.0 KCC 356 Porsche Speedster
An update...........holy sh*t indeed.......lol.
Tackled some smaller projects this weekend that had been bugging me for a while, first was the roof. I've had this thing patched 3-4 times already and repaired over and over again, only to have it pull loose, so I decided to use carpet glue and low and behold, so far so good, it's working. I wasn't taking a chance with driving with the car with a roof that isn't working properly with the chance of rain nailing me at any time. So until I get the new roof measured, this'll do just fine.

Next was a start on the interior. I've been looking at several options for carpets and threshold trim and came across some really nice trim that I think will work just fine, at R30 for a 3meter length, this is right up my street. I have some more trim work to do here as well as strat my search for mounting srews, but I'm happy. Now it's waiting for my carpet guy to show me his new addition to his inventory, a really nice square weave knock off that I'd like to try. There is actually a lot of things involved with creating that proper threshold look, but I'd be damned as if I'm going to pay R2000 per side to get it looking that way.

Here's where I am on my windows, I've started mock up and heating the ally until I was half happy with it. Now I can look at making a proper plug for the opening and then working on bending the lip channel to see if I can get this stuff to work, I'm pretty happy with the first results and will push more on this, I want a working prototype by the weekend.

I also have my steering wheel on order from replicars........hopefully have that by the weekend.

Re: 2.0 KCC 356 Porsche Speedster
decided that seeing that the car has to have the dash remoulded for the gauges as well as some additions that I've chosen to make as well as repairing a few knicks and marks that she's picked up over the time. I've decided that the car will be resprayed at some stage as well.
More than likely a gunmetal metallic grey like this,

But the other choices are red/ black or white.

Re: 2.0 KCC 356 Porsche Speedster
Well I've been making these for a while for buddies, but decided that it's time to make 1 or two for me for good measure.
Started with some 10mm round bar stock cut to 1300mm, which will give me a overall circumference of 400mm.

Any guesses to what this will be?
As I mentioned, I'll be making 2, 1 banyo style and one racier woodgrain, using Rhodesian Teak with steel rivets. The wood and fibreglass is the easy part, I've just never been able to get hold of a usable frame. That was until I was asked to make one for a friend. When saw how his ended up, I decided to make a few more. These are made from scratch and even the hubs are turned by a local company out of steel, so no cast iron is needed. So that way everything can be welded together.
Will be welding this up over the weekend as well as adding the banjo sections and the hub. Total cost,,,,,,,,,,,,,,R400 for the frame, banjo sections and the hub. The wood work, routing and rivets can be done for a little under R500. So yes, people are being ripped off by being charged almost R3000 for a wood one and upto R5000 for a repop banjo.
Before anyone asks, at this stage, the frames are not for sale..............when I have more time...........maybe.

Re: 2.0 KCC 356 Porsche Speedster
Cheers for that one, will have some big updates coming soon as I want this thing done ASAP.
Also have decided to drop the 2.0 type 4 motor that IMPI is busy building for me. Many reasons, the main one is bang for buck, so depending on what Armand wants and doesn't want, I'll more than likely be holding a big arsed sale in here soon.
By the way, the prices listed are what I paid........not what I want.......lol.
- Bearing sets - There are 2 sets (mahle) of mains and 2 sets of cam bearings. - R720
- New pistons & sleeves - bought from bugger for R1800, Ceramic coated 2.0 type 4
- Rings - I paid R360
- 2.0 type 4 block, Machining & Balancing of motor - This is pretty much brand new - R4200
- 276 cam done by VDL, this includes the followers as well - R700 + R240
- EFI type 4 Intakes and carbs as ITB's - R600
- Modified brand new polo dizzy - R230
- 4-2-1 Exhaust - one off custom, perfect for this motor - R700
- 260cc Set of injectors - R250
- stainless valves 38/40's I think - R2850
As I said, Armand has first option on the above as there is money owing on certain items, heads/ shroud and that would have to be sorted first.
If he chooses not to take anything then I'll be offering the lot for a damn cheap price as a bulk sale. I have about R15 000 in this engine so far, but would be looking at being happy with getting back R8000. Everything is still unused and has not been installed.
