Rebuilding a gearbox

Post by flatfourfan »

I'm taking out the gearbox in my bus next week and I'm now in the process of looking for someone who can rebuild it for me. It pops out of reverse, but is actually pretty smooth. Anyone in the Pretoria reagion???

Finding a good gear for reverse is the problem!!!!!
The only people i have ever heard good things about is Erlemann motors in Joburg they have the experience to do bug boxes not cheap though!
They can even do some ratios though if you ask nicely
Be aware that the bus had a .82 fourth ration and lots of people want them. so do not accept an exchange bug unit. Not even the Brazils had these. Are you going to lower the Bus. I am busy prototyping an straight axle setup getting rid of the reduction boxes.

Thanks IMPI.

The bus is going to retain the reduction boxes as well as the stock ride height. I've found a local dude, who builds formula VEE bug boxes and he's going to be doing the work on my baby, quoted back with a R1500 quote to overhaul the entire gearbox. Sounds good to me........

R1500 is damn cheap, you better hope that the work done is not the same, R3000 to R4000 depending on the initial issues, is more what it costs nowdays do do the box 100%. Do Formula Vee's use beetle boxes :?: :?: :?:

oops, my bad..........R1500 is for labour........I'm providing new parts....

I've purchased, synchro kit, bearing kit, new gear kit from the UK.

He works on beetle boxes mainly, but has rebuilt several stock bus tranny's.

I would also recommend Erlemanns - you must see their workshop - man! You could eat from the shop floors! I also hear that they are very expensive. Asks about R8000 to redo my 1800 combi gearbox

They seem to specialise on audi, porsche and vw.

Anybody had any dealings with them directly?

These days it is not easy to get hold of a dedicated workshop to work on our old cars.

that had better be 200% better than new.......

The guy that's doing mine did the mods on my beetle gearbox with a longer 4th..........I did over 50 000 with NO problems.....

R3200 if they do everything, R1500 if I get the parts......
