More clutch woes

Post by jmvv »

On the way home on Saturday, the clutch started grabbing.

Immediately its a case of "What did we do wrong?" seeing as the engine was out for a clutch fork repair only two days earlier.

Limped home and adjusted the clutch, but no joy.

This morning when I got to work, Andre had already dropped the motor (Quite windgat he tells me "I do it so often, it now only takes me ten minutes - on my own")

Everything seemed fine and in the correct places. Then we noticed that the thrust surface on the pressure plate sat at an angle. One of the three fingers on the pressure plate had its adjustment bolt come loose. This then caused the finger to not release pressure on the friction plate, causing a clutch shudder when engaging and drag on release.

I contacted various so-called clutch repair shops and nobody could help me to reset the fingers, so after a serious parts hunt, a new clutch assembly is going in.

The guys with the best prices would only have stock in two or three days - so Volkspares came to the resque again.

All I can think of is that the piece that broke off the clutch fork earlier, had been bashed around the bellhousing and had hammered the nut on the finger loose.

So if anybody wants a slightly used clutch assembly, its yours for free. Just pick it up before Saturday

Split bus and beetle clutches are essentially interchangeable. 1200 Beetles and bus clutches are interchangeable. 64-67 German split buses can use the clutch from pre-71 1300/1500/1600 Beetles, and Fleetlines can use a post-71 Beetle clutch. Assuming, of course, that the original transmission is fitted. Originally, Bus clutches had a stronger spring in the pressure plate than Beetles, but the modern OEM replacements all use the heavier PP spring.
