After lots of help, from lots of forum members, I started by VW for the first time yesterday:
First attempt at a start:

Second attempt (a little more throttle and unnecessary extra mixture):

Final run for the day (a little more juice and a deliberate lean-cut at the end):

Thanks for all the help I have received on this forum - the engine runs (and sounds) great!
First start - thanks for all the help!

Fascinating. Do you have to adjust fuel and air mixture in the cockpit on the fly?

Engine is a 2180 (92x82) type 1. The exhast is dual 2 into 1 straight pipes. Was actually remarkably quite!
The carb is an AeroInjector - a flat slide throttle body injector. I am starting with a fresh carb - completely un-adjusted. Once it is tuned, it will give pretty even mixture from idle to full throttle. The in-cockpit mixture adjustment is just to lean for optimal fuel burn, but it does also help for testing and tuning, as you can tweak the mixture to your heart's content...
